Is mounting /var as tmpfs a good idea or are there apps that do not adhere to /var being strictly for "transient and temporary files" that do not survive to the next boot?

having the entire var on tmpfs is bad. Ignoring all of the other problems, you would lose your logs and pacman database on every boot.

No, mouting /var as tmpfs is not a good idea. Things in /var/lib (i.e. pacman's database), /var/log, /var/spool (i.e. crontabs, mails) are meant to be persistent.

Thanks guys.
Glad I asked before wasting any time trying it. The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) says that files in /var are transient and temporary when it really means variable and changes often.
