No, that's not a safe assumption -- but your phrasing may simply reflect a lack of understanding or looseness with language. In ... (shortened down by quoter)
You do have a point, it should have been "boot manager" instead of "bootloader", my bad. Great explanation btw.
Sometimes, when I'm trying to get any audio software or hardware working with my system, I wonder why I ditched Windows. But every time I work at a windows computer, I remember it again.

@MFserver, the explanation was great because srs5694 is the creator of rEFInd.

Got the same issue on my T430s
3.7.3 did not work, it worked again with 3.7.4 up until 3.7.7 (might have missed an update)
3.7.8 and 3.7.9 do not work.
Got refind 0.6.7-1 installed.

Just to get back in this.
First off, I now have a laptop running Arch (it's the old Dell that I want to get rid of. ) so I should be able to be pretty consistent posting to this now. FYI, I am a noob so I will need guidance.
Second, I can say that as I just came from Ubuntu just three days ago, I had a TON of trouble with any Ubuntu kernel that was older than 3.2.30 or something like that, so this doesn't seem to be isolated to Arch. Same thing with Mint (although it does essentially use the Ubuntu software). I don't have any experience with any other distros so I can't say anything about them. The Dell I am running runs Arch, Ubuntu, and Mint just fine (although it isn't UEFI).
Hope this helps.

@DaBungalow:
The problem being worked on this thread is specific to UEFI-capable machines, possibly limited to Lenovo Thinkpads. The problem also seems to be specific to kernels 3.7.x, and may even be specific to kernels compiled for Arch Linux.
Offline
FWIW, I just installed linux-ck 3.7.9-1 from the AUR and am able to boot just fine via UEFI using rEFInd.
I don't have time to examine the kernel options or patches in detail right now, but evidently there's something different between the Arch packages for linux 3.7.9 and linux-ck 3.7.9 that throws a wrench in the machine.
Offline
It's not only Lenovo issue. I have same problem on my Dell 7220 - linux 3.7.5 and 3.7.7 works fine, other versions don't.

Had the same problem on Lenovo T430 after an upgrade to 3.7.9-1. I'm using rEFInd. Then I upgraded to 3.7.9-1-ck and (strangely) all was working fine but had to drop it as an option since I had to also install nvidia-ck drivers which did not work for me. (I got some kind of error)
Now, I am back to 3.7.7-1.
As a side note please take a look at the 3.7.9 release notes - http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … eLog-3.7.9. There are a number of changes concerning EFI + one comment:
Documentation/x86/x86_64/uefi.txt:
===============================================================================
...
- If some or all EFI runtime services don't work, you can try following
kernel command line parameters to turn off some or all EFI runtime
services.
noefi turn off all EFI runtime services
...
===============================================================================
Has anyone tried that ?

@petrov:
I just tried adding "noefi" to the kernel command line in refind_linux.conf. It still doesn't boot.
On the other hand, I have been able to boot into linux-ck 3.7.9-1. I then installed the corresponding nvidia-ck package 313.18-4. All went well for me, and I can now boot into linux-ck 3.7.9-1 just fine, then start X and KDE.
I've got a T420, set up for discrete graphics and uefi-only booting.

@dhave, maybe this is why I never experienced this issue. I use linux-ck-ivybridge as my everyday kernel. Just know that if you had big plans on using systemd user sessions, the ck kernel does not support this.

Well, I reckon I ought to find out what that is. On the other hand, I've gotten along pretty well so far without knowing, so maybe I'll stay ignorant. What I don't know about I can't covet.
EDIT: Uh, oh. I made the mistake of reading this page, where systemd user session management is described as "awesome" and "amazing." I never should have looked it up. Of course, these words have no doubt also been used to describe Britney Spears ....

Thanks for your input. I was wondering if anyone else has taken this path. In my case I think the issue was that I did not specify the SYSSRC param as stated in the nvidia installer log.
Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
Anyhow, this is not important. I think I will wait a bit until deciding to go with ck as an option .
It is strange that the ck kernel works. I can't seem to find anything as changes (other than patch-3.7.9) to the EFI code in the ck patches.

@dhave, I set up systemd user sessions since I too was curious, and it is seriously pretty cool. Systemd monitors things like X and your applications. So you can actually change window managers or desktop environments wile keeping all the running applications going. Pretty cool!
Sorry for the OT all.

That's kinda like being able to change from a Ford to a BMW while driving down the highway, without stopping.

@dhave - Similar in fashion, yes. But it also gives you the ability to automatically restart applications (now services) on failure and all the other great awesomeness that service files have to offer. Should probably leave this discussion here though and let this thread go on as it should.

Just ran into this issue on a Lenovo Thinkpad X230 with kernel 3.7.9-1. I was running 3.7.4-1 just fine up until yesterday when I decided to do an update and promptly killed my laptop. Using a livecd I had sitting around I was able to get back in and revert to 3.7.4-1 and I'm up and running again, but this failure to boot on seemingly random kernel versions makes me worry about doing any more updates.

@Orclev, you should install a traditional bootloader as a backup. If you are using efistub, you are using a boot manager (simply a menu that lets you select the kernel/initrd and pass it options while using a bootloader that is built into the kernel itself), whereas, something like grub2-efi is like the bootloaders used in a traditional bios system. So if you use grub2, for example, it should get you around this.

Good news, folks.
The Arch kernel 3.7.9-2 boots just fine in my UEFI-only system, booting via rEFInd.
I'm one of those who have been unable to boot many of the Arch kernels in the 3.7.x series via rEFInd with my system set on UEFI-only.
FWIW, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T420.
I hope the rest of you have similarly good results.

Nope. No luck on my ThinkPad x230 with reFind efi only boot.

Strange, indeed.
You did do the easily-forgotten step of copying over the kernel file and initramfs file to your EFI partition, right?

I didn't.
But now he tells me "...wait 10 seconds for /dev/sda3..." :-(
(i also tried it with the uuid).
I guess I fucked something up during the kernel switches...

Enjoy it while it lasts, and cross your fingers when you later update to 3.7.9-3 or 3.8.x.
I wish somebody could figure out what's behind this strange phenomenon.

I can also confirm that 3.7.9-2 boots fine on my laptop. I have had problems with 3.7.9-1, 3.7.8-1, 3.7.6-1, and some others from the 3.7.x series if I remember correctly. Perhaps a little detail on my system in case it helps tracking down the problem:
Lenovo W530
UEFI Only setup - Booting with rEFInd
Discreet Graphics Only - NVIDIA Quadro K2000M

I can reproduce this on my Fujitsu AH512, booting UEFI rEFInd with GPT partition scheme:
- linux-ck 3.7.9-2 boot's fine
- linux 3.7.9-2 and linux-ck 3.7.10-1 refuses boot
I use repo-ck...
