Unfortunately I have the same problem. xf86-video-vmware doesn't seem to work with the current version of xorg-server. I've installed xf86-video-vesa and now I can at least boot into the graphical environment but this is no real workaround as the resizing of the virtual machine doesn't work now.

Hi all!
Have three different Arch Linux VM's running VMWare. I followed the instructions here and installed XFCE and everything worked fine.
However, now neither VM will start X. Neither XFCE or the login manager (for the one VM that has one installed).
Any idea whats wrong?
startxfce4 just hangs on "Loading extension GLX"
Any help is much appreciated.

Same problem here, using xf86-video-vesa didn't help, but gave me a 'no screens found' error.

I have meet the same problem, the issue is merge libgl to mesa-libgl, so I try downgrade mesa-libgl to libgl and downgrade mesa also:
sudo pacman -Rdd mesa /* remove current mesa, ignore dep check */
sudo pacman -Uf /var/cache/pacman/pkg/libgl-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz /* force install libgl */
sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/mesa-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz /* install old mesa without libgl */
after that, my archlinux under vmware could normal boot to gnome3

Disabling glx-tls had no effect whatsoever on my system. The only way to start X is using the vesa driver. Could any of you provide additional details regarding your X configuration and VMWare environment (version, host OS, even the native graphics hardware) so I can try to replicate your results?

Didn't work for me either under VMware Fusion 5.0.2. Host is Mac OS X 10.8.2 on a 2012 MacBook Pro with NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M/Intel HD 4000 graphics.

Same problem here on an ESXi 5.1 host with Archlinux VM.
I can work around this problem by adding a Xorg conf file with the following lines:
Section "Module"
Disable "glx"
EndSection

Chroot from a live CD and ''pacman -R xf86-video-vmware'' got my VM booting and working exactly the way it did before installing the package.

This worked for me. But like you said no pretty graphics. Ill keep watch on the bug and see when its fixed!

Just for reference, from a "newbie", here's how I got past this, with GLX enabled for acceleration, in a fresh install (no cache). Assuming an x86_64 system. Change the x86_64 in all locations to i686 for 32 bit installs
sudo pacman -S xorg-server xf86-video-vmware xf86-input-vmmouse xorg-xinit xterm
sudo pacman -Rdd mesa
wget http://arm.konnichi.com/extra/os/x86_64/mesa-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
wget http://arm.konnichi.com/extra/os/x86_64/libgl-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
sudo pacman -Uf libgl-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
sudo pacman -Uf mesa-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
echo exec xterm > ~/.xinitrc
startx

How did you do this? I tried it but I get some error messages when I run the pacman commands (these days -f doesn't work so I used --force).
but it tells me that libgl requires libglapi when I try to install mesa.
I'm a bit confused. I have an old VM from before I even installed mesa. Is there a way to install these without having to remove a never mesa first?
Also, I dont understand which package depends on which.
Pacman automatically installs mesa 9.1.2 when I try the first install of libgl-9.0.2. And when I try to install mesa 9.0.2 first, it tells me that it needs libgl.
Am I missing something?

@ceauke, You need to double up on the -d parameter to skip all dependency checks. This will allow you to install each package separately (w/o dependency checks).
sudo pacman -U --nodeps --nodeps --force libgl-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
sudo pacman -U --nodeps --nodeps --force mesa-9.0.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
From the pacman help:
-d, --nodeps
Skips dependency version checks. Package names are still checked.
Normally, pacman will always check a package’s dependency fields to
ensure that all dependencies are installed and there are no package
conflicts in the system. Specify this option twice to skip all
dependency checks.
