Hi, when I run /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/spadmin to setup printer options I get this error: "No printers can be installed, because the file system is read-only." This happens from root and user. I need to run this since LO won't save the printer config from within the program itself. I want to set the printer language type from PDF to Postscript 2 and have it stay that way.
Any ideas?
Edit: solved with today's update to 4.0.1-2.

I have no answer how to make your filesystem read+write (according to LO), but probably LO won't let you save the settings from within the program itself because of the same reason...
I know that LO has applied patches to printing in linux from v3.5.1 - maybe they need changes in the buildscripts to work correctly.
These are the bugreports that I have been following and posting to (all regarding printing/faxing in linux):

I have always had problem with spadmin with the archlinus package of libreoffice (as well as openoffice before). The official build of libreoffice works fine.

I posted this same problem on the LibreOffice forums but they don't seem too active. It seems to be an Arch-specific problem. It doesn't happen in other distros.

Is there a solution to this problem. For me, as he is, and it is very annoying.
Spadmin wanted to change the language used to print PDF to postscript permanently.

You should set your desired printer to the default printer in cups interface. spadmin is not needed in Arch.

No, it is necessary: ou need it to make libreoffice set the printing language to PDF or PS. . For examfple, installing a faxprinter works only from libreoffice if it is set to use PS, and spadmin makes it possible to change that setting systemwide...

More info in this recent blogpost: http://technik.blogs.nde.ag/2012/10/17/ … breoffice/
The only thing missing in it is how you can add the number to send the fax to automagically. It should be possible by enlosing the number somewhere in the document surrounded by '@@'

Spadmin is needed; setting the default printer, as I have done, in CUPS does not affect this. Not being able to run 'spadmin' means that I have to reset PDF' to 'PS' for every new document. I want, like I can with every other OS, to be able to set it globally.

Ok. If you think Arch spadmin tool is somehow broken by a packaging error report this to our tracker. If you think it's an upstream issue please report it to the freedesktop tracker. Please also check how OpenSuSE, FC and Debian deal with it.

Hi
I got the same problem. I filled a bug report, see: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/32698

Lo
I've always got a problem running spadmin (cf bugreport). But, strangely, with the last version of LO (3.6.4-3), I could print anew...

same probleme here :-(
Is there a solution ?

Not yet. I've filed a bug here; https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55962
Also I posted a message on the LibreOffice forums quite a while ago and got no response there. This seems to be only a problem on Arch.

I have no clue what might break it. If it is caused by using some certain system lib at build time instead of an expected internal source or if you need a running local cupsd or whatever.

I have the same experience -- two Arch laptops which cannot configure the printer on LIbreOffice. Local printing is fine, but the remote printer can be seen, but not configured (no ability to set oritentation, tray, etc) and cannot print.
This has been for quite a while (at least 6 mth). Previously around the time of LO 3.4 remote printing was ok. It seems to be an Arch only issue, as I can print ok from LO running on other distros.

Much more than that, I have had the spadmin problem for years in archlinux. Well before the OpenOffice/LibreOfice fork. The bug is not critical in the sense that there is not much to configure to have printing working, but after all this time it should be fine if this problem is addressed.

I have the same problem both in Arch Linux and Bridge Linux, on a laptop and two desktops! CUPS works but LibreOffice printing no! I also tried as root, it doesn't change a thing! So, we're waiting!
All the best,

I can't reproduce this anymore in LibO 4.0.1 without any related changes in the build. Can you confirm it to be solved? Then mark it also upstream as solved.

I just upgraded to LO 4.0.1 and the problem persists as user and as root.
