When I plug in my hard drive it is detected and booted as normal but when I try to open it up using a file manager, I get an error message saying:
Error when getting information for file '/run/media/blah/Blah/LOST.DIR': Input/output error. When I use the command:
ls /run/media/blah/BlahIt displays:
ls: cannot access /run/media/imran/Imran/Backup: Input/output error
ls: cannot access /run/media/imran/Imran/LOST.DIR: Input/output errorFollowed by all the files that I have on the hard drive. I have ntfs-3g and ntfsprogs installed and it still does not work. It is an "ADATA Superior SH93".

Do you have access to a Windows machine? Try running a chkdsk on your drive.

Yeah sounds like either a corrupt filesystem (hopefully), or a failing drive (hopefully not). Take anonymous_users advice, or do a fsck on it.
Check the SMART status as well. I think the package is smartmontools, but I am on the train right now and checking is a PITA.

Booting the hard drive from Windows fixed it thanks.
