Recovering freetype2-infinality junkie - freetype2 renders weird

I recently had to uninstall freetype2-infinality due to some oddities in gimp. Now that I am using vanilla freetype2 my OS fonts look all messed up. Nothing exotic on my system: xfce4/xfwm. Monitor is an ASUS VS247 running @ 1920x1080.

Have experimented with hinting and have AA enabled using 'droid sans/10' without messing with dpi override. Not too sure what to do to make things look more visually pleasing. Advice is appreciated.

I installed fontconfig-infinality and selected 'win7'. I use droid-sans myself and heve been very pleased thus far.

Right... to use gimp, I needed to remove it.

It all depends on what hinting and subpixel smoothing levels you prefer. I find vanilla freetype to have the best font rendering on any desktop platform. I have .config/fontconfig/fonts.conf with:

The default configuration leaves the lcd filter off, and it goes graycale RGBA to medium hinting (infinality does something silimar?). I don't, however, even have any Microsoft font installed, so no webpage is shoving Arial down my throat, which is great. The Windows fonts do not render well at medium to smaller sizes with my setup at all.
