A few days ago I did a fresh install of ArchLinux on an older laptop, an Asus z33ae, and I cannot get the sound to work. Though there are many threads out there about troubleshooting and solutions for problems with snd_hda_intel, I couldn't find anything that fit my problem so I hope someone here will be able to help me.
I identified the hardware as Intel HDA with Realtek ALC880 codec:

Without having changed any configuration, it looks to me like the sound drivers have been loaded properly:

In aslamixer, I was expecting to see "PCM" and/or "Front" but there is only one item called "Beep". Searching in dmesg output, I find:

I tried changing some module options by editing /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf but to no avail. For instance, I tried this:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias snd-slot-0 snd-card-0
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

Hi,
Thanks for that tip. I had only tried model=asus and that did not change anything. But now I've played with it more and I found that model=3stack (or 5stack) give me output from aplay -l:

and there are a whole bunch of faders in alsamixer: Master, Headphone, PCM, Front, etc. I unmuted everything and put everything up to 100%. Still no sound, but it seems like progress. Any other ideas?
