Root can't login from tty[1-6]

Hi there!
I'm using an Arch 2013 fresh install, and, since certain point on the installation proccess, I can't login as root from a tty anymore. Both 'su root' and sudo from my normal user work flawlessly, and of course I can login with my normal user from there.

I suspect it's something related with systemd, as I'm archlinux user since a couple of years ago and I haven't ever experienced this issue, and a friend which installed Arch at the same time as me, has a similar problem.

Any hint out there? If you would like to look out at any file, I'll pastebin it ASAP.

PD: Yes, I've googled. A lot. And found nothing. Ah, and tty[1-6] are listed in /etc/securetty.

Curiosity: If you setup visudo, and su/sudo works fine, what would be the point of logging in as root?
Inquiry: What is the error when you attempt to login as root?  Also, did you set a root password while arch-chrooted during installation? If the answer to the last question is, no, then the answer is to reboot archiso, mount, chroot, run passwd, unmount, reboot.

I doubt it has to do with systemd. Why would you think that? Works fine here and, yes, I am using systemd. Do you have any particular reason to think systemd might be implicated?

Yes! I had no problem with that, since I had my normal user and sudo -i.

Answer to curiosity: Convenience. If I have to perform several operations as root, I prefer to login as root instead of my normal user and then using "sudo -i" (that way I would need to enter my password twice).
Answers to inquiries:
The error (my fault not mentioning it) its the standad "Login incorrect". Yes, I set a password. I have also tried updating it to something like "1234" with "sudo passwd root", But nothing changed.

Well, that was just a guess, but it seems to odd too me that three machines running arch (My PC, a friend's PC, and my Raspberry pi) have the same login problems...

So to clarify, you are not on a VM.  You successfully installed.  Boot up the pc and at the login prompt, you enter root and then it displays password prompt and you enter it in and it says login incorrect?

You say you had your normal user and sudo during the install process??? When you boot arch iso install media it automatically goes to root user from where you make your installation and you don't even have to use sudo! Something is not correct in your statement.

Well, I think I misexplained myself. When I referred to install, I mean installing archlinux from the live-cd AND configuring the basics (locale, keymap, user adding, etc).
My steps were: 1) Booted archiso, pacstrap, chroot, some config, mkinitcpio. Reboot. 2) Basic config (adduser, locales, etc). Reboot. 3) I weren't able to login as root at this point.

I apologise for the confusion ><

What did you mean by that ?
You meant systemd works fine or root login in tty works fine.

I have the same issue as the OP and I too can't do a root login in ttys as described by the OP.

Logging in to a TTY as root works fine here. You have set a root passwd, presumably?

Post your /etc/passwd and /etc/sudoers, there might be something wrong in those files. Also check /etc/shadow, if root actually has a password.. better not post it. It should look like:

root:long_hashes:some_number::::::

Also, post the output of "journalctl -b" after a failed login attept

EDIT:
Did you change anything related to pam, like cfr (post #10) suggested?

I had that once. Can you change /usr/bin/bash into /bin/bash in /etc/passwd for root and retry ?
It did the trick for me.

Yes it worked. How did that change in the first place?

My fedora has the setup with just /bin/bash. Something should have introduced the change in arch.

In the hindsight I changed my default shell to zsh once few weeks ago. Is that responsible ?

The bash binary was moved from /bin to /usr/bin with 4.2.042-2. /bin/bash is now a symlink.
Could that somehow caused this?
On a side note, why did your root account use /usr/bin/bash in the first place? The filesystem package still uses /bin/bash, I think

You meant systemd works fine or root login in tty works fine.

I have the same issue as the OP and I too can't do a root login in ttys as described by the OP.

I meant that root login to tty works fine (on a systemd system).

Yes, /etc/shells only contains /bin/bash, and /bin/sh by default.

Thank you! That solved a problem I'd been having since a fresh install yesterday! I could log in as root -- an account created by the install process -- but not log in as any user I created with adduser following the directions in the Arch wiki. The trouble is that I listed everyone's shell as /usr/bin/bash. When I changed them to /bin/bash all the logins now succeed.

These login failures due to the shell being wrong were reported as authentication failures in the logs. Journalctl would report: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM tty3 FOR jc, Authentication failure. I'd spent yesterday thinking I had a problem in my security configuration.
