Tango Icons for Noodle

Hi all,
You may remember me as the guy who made that aqua logo and some gdm themes a long while back, probably not as it was a while ago. I've recently discovered the Tango project, and thought I'd make some arch icons (gnome users, at least, have an Arch menu in Applications) in the Tango style.
I'm still working on them, but I thought I'd get some community feedback before I scale them down to the smaller sizes.
Since so many people based backgrounds off the aqua logo (and it really had some big deficiencies) I've tried to be very careful with these, but I'd really like some feedback on colours/contrast and any other criticisms you can hurl at them, I've gone with Tango's blue, rather than Arch's which may or may not be a problem.
Obviously, being SVG, they will scale up. As always, once they're done anyone is free to base anything off them.

Those are meant to be pieces of macaroni by the way, to represent "noodle". I thought a little more about the noodle name and tried to make an icon that looked like one of those kettle noodle snack things (directly based off Pot Noodle for you brits out there). Not sure if I was successful, perhaps a Chinese Take-out style box full of noodles would be more universal? I'm not sure, but would appreciate any comments along those lines too.

The SVGs are all in http://www.e-st.net/art/work/scalable
Finally, I am aware of the XFCE competition, but don't have any plans to make an entry since I'm a Gnomer. Anyone who wants to take these and run with them, feel free, but like I said, they're not done yet.

Cheers!
Edd

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

I think they're looking great!  I think that quality graphics can really add to the legitimacy of a project, and those icons are superb!  I'm sure that once you're done tweaking them, people will come up with a bunch of uses for 'em...

I wish I had more time to contribute to Arch's image...too many projects, so little time  big_smile

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

I really dig them too. I do agree that a chinese take-out box would probably be more universal though as your current icon looks like a trashcan full of noodles to me wink But keep it up, nice work.

Nice, indeed! smile
I agree with the others on the noodle snack thing, the chinese take-away box would fit better. We aren't used to rounded snack boxes here, too ;-)

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

Wow, thanks guys. It's really very easy to make good icons with that tango style guide, it's awesome.
Anyway, sorry for taking so long, I've been busy with other stuff, but here's my next noodle effort, and any improvement suggestions would be gratefully received. Then I'll start scaling them and packaging them.

Thanks for all the input!

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

Heh, I never went away, just lurked unhelpfully. I'll do some work on finishing these off tomorrow, if there's nothing obvious that needs changing.
Thanks for all the kind words! If you like the look of the Tango project and what it's aiming to do, there are some  packages in the AUR from willysilly that need your vote! wink
I'll endeavour to get something together tomorrow, and maybe make a noodle theme for the gdm, or a splash screen or something...

Any idea how to submit stuff to art.archlinux.org? Last time I did a logo I just emailed it to Judd wink

BigBdPenuin: no disrespect, but Gullible was probably referring to Iphitus! He's been rather elusive recently.

Well that makes more sense.  wink
I only know iphitus through his (excellent) kernel projects, so I didn't notice any absence.

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

Well the basic resizes are done, and I'm thinking it's not worth trying to shrink the noodle box any more. Think I'll add more detail and do a background out of it or something instead...
Anyway, you can get the icons here: http://www.e-st.net/art/work/arch-tango … gos.tar.gz
and there's a screenshot showing them all here: http://www.e-st.net/art/work/arch-tango/scrot.png

I tried to find if there were naming guidelines for a distribution's icon in tango, but I couldn't find any.

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

Thanks.
I did, actually a long time ago, and they couldn't understand why a distribution would need its own icons or menu items... So, I'll just release them into theas they are. And if someone wants to add them to the next arch-artwork or whatever, that'd be coo. Not sure how to contact dejari, who maintains it.
Judd's apparently picked up on them though, which is awesome. Thanks again for the wonder that is Arch, Judd!

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

Nice looking icons, but maybe my opinon is a bit obvious since I have used them when I have created cd-labels, wallpapers and themes for gdm/slim.  Thanks for letting me use them. smile

cd-labels: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight=
themes/wallpapers: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight=

The reason why I am posting in this thread is that I have found some errors in 4 of the icons. BTW I have corrected these errors so it hopefully want appear in future artworks. I can remove the corrected versions (at least from the server where they are hosted) if you really want to correct the errors by yourself. The first error I found was that the shadow only looks good on light background colors and especially   white. The second error wasn't that obvious, it needed some scaling in gimp to really see it. The error is that it seems like the shadow is to large which means that it will be cut.

What do you consider "grown-up" colors then?

I can't get over the noodle version of the icon: it looks like Arch is taking a dump. big_smile

Re: Tango Icons for Noodle

@PJ: Fantastic work! I won't recreate, it, let's just say you've adopted them shall we? The GDM and CD covers are great too, continue to use the logos as you see fit. Strictly speaking the shadow should be centred, if we're following the Tango style specs, so if you wanted to keep working on them that would be the next thing to fix I guess.

@pholie: The colours were chosen by the Tango project, not me.. So take it up with them tongue
