Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

this line in efibootmgr -v is odd: "Boot0001  UEFI : USB : Intenso Rainbow Line 8.07 : PART 0 : OS Bootloader"

I didn't use a usb stick for installation. I have that usb stick though and once used it to install arch much earlier. Not this time though. That's strange ..

Hm, looks a little chaotic wink . Anyway, the entries either for rEFInd and Grub (you don't need both) look odd. A correct entry should look similar to these:

Boot0002* rEFInd        HD(2,3200800,800000,c1d89587-9814-4b67-8862-30d45d94a4d9)File(\EFI\refind\refind_x64.efi)

I'm not an expert, but to me it looks, as if there are no valid nvram entries. My best guess would be to try to generate a working entry using efibootmgr as it is shown here.

# efibootmgr -c -g -d /dev/sda -p 1 -w -L "Arch Linux (GRUB)" -l '\EFI\arch_grub\grubx64.efi'

... provided that the file "/boot/efi/EFI/arch_grub/grubx64.efi" exists.

After that (and if there are no errors) you could re-check the entry with "efibootmgr" and try booting from it.

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

You can clear all boot entries with "efibootmgr", then reboot (it will automatically recreate cd/dvd and hardrive entries on reboot, so don't be afraid to remove all entries).

Boot with arch media cd and chroot into your system and with dm_mod and efivars active you can run  "efibootmgr" again to create your boot entry, and move it to first boot option.

There is, at least in post #23, which is the original one. Some of those who've quoted that have truncated the list.

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

ok, thanks for all your help so far, I am going to rely on it, cause it's like cancer, I can't get rid of that stupid error message. In fact, I always get two:

first this shows up:
"No loader found. Configuration files in \loader\entries\*.conf are needed."

then this one:

"a bootable device has not been detected"

I cleared all entries in efibootmgr and reformatted /dev/sda1 and installed grub2 again. But, I am still getting the same error!

Did you guys have a look at my fstab postet in #18 ? I wasn't sure to remove all options and adding "noatime" to it. But that's what I got from the wiki. Is fstab correct?

If so, what else can I do? (I also tried to use rEFInd but I got same result)

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

For me it works like this:

modprobe dm-mod
modprobe efivars
pacman -S grub-efi-x86_64
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck --debug
mkdir -p /boot/grub/locale
cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

You don't need to copy initramfs or kernel to the ESP partition, because grub2 will autodetect efi kernels automatically from /boot directory!

then run efibootmgr -v to see if it created your entries

Don't forget you need to have "lvm2" hook in your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file under HOOKS="base udev autodetect block lvm2 ............" and "dm_mod" module under MODULES="dm_mod" and only then you build your initramfs "mkinitcpio -p linux"

I also noted you changed your fstab's efi partition mount options:

# /dev/sda1
#UUID=52B0-6H3W         /boot/efi       vfat            rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,
#iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro$
UUID=52B0-6H3W          /boot/efi       vfat            noatime 0 2

You don't need to do it because default options works very well.

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

My fstab doesn't look much like that. My entries for the lvm partitions start e.g. /dev/mapper/vgroup-xxx. I'm using LUKS which is maybe different from what you've doing, though.

still no success!

one thing caught my eyes: which one is correct? dm-mod or dm_mod??

and regarding the fstab, what do you mean? Should I leave it as it is? In the wiki it states I should remove all options and add noatime. At least in my fstab there was no noatime so I added that manually and removed everything else.

is it really correct to unmount /mnt/boot/efi after I exit chroot? So I have nothing mounted when I reboot my system?

if you do:

modinfo dm-mod

modinfo dm_mod

you will see that its the same.

In all my efi install i never changed anything in my fstab from de default created with

genfstab -U -p /mnt > /mnt/etc/fstab

The wiki details about fstab are mainly to optimize the partition, so it wont consume unnecessary resources (if you want to know what each option does just do a google search).

If you unmount  /mnt/boot/efi after exiting chroot there is no problem because when you reboot your system will rely on the fstab you created to mount partitions.

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

Also you can try this:

modprobe dm-mod
modprobe efivars
arch-chroot /mnt
efibootmgr -c -g -d /dev/sda -p 1 -w -L "arch_grub" -l '\EFI\arch_grub\grubx64.efi'

Then run efibootmgr -v to see if it saved the boot entry and place the boot entry as first in the boot order!

EDIT: Sorry about that:

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

thanks so far, I am grateful for your help. I tried the above, unfortunately without any difference ...

I also checked modinfo and saw it's the same. So if I put "dm_mod" or "dm-mod" under MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf won't make any difference right?

I also realised whatever I change the boot order to, it always changes back to loading the DVD Drive first. Well, I guess that has to be expected because once my system doesn't start without DVD-ROM, I go back to BIOS and "enable optical drive". So I guess, that's when the order I created in efibootmgr gets overwritten. But I have yet to see grub2 appear as an option while booting. It never does.

Without efi it has never been a problem.

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

If you are able to run archiso in uefi mode, you can boot to efi shell (v2), and you can try to add a boot entry using "bcfg" command:

Shell> bcfg boot add 0 fs0:\EFI\arch_grub\grubx64.efi "Arch Linux (grub)"

where fs0: is the mapping corresponding to the UEFI System Partition (in my system my efi partition is "fs1:"). If you run the command "map" it will list all filesystems available. You can always enter in a filesystem by writing fs0:, fs1:, fs2:, etc, and run the command "dir" or "ls" to see its contents

You can also run your .efi file directly from efi shell!

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

it was fs1 for me too, but this didn't work either, unbelievable...

by the way, I tried modinfo efivars and there wasn't any outcome. Does this mean anything?

from shell v2 I can boot into system, that works!

this is the path:

fs1:\EFI\arch_grub\grubx64.efi

I also noticed that it won't change bootorder after executing command efibootmgr -o 0,2,3. It's still 3,0,2. 3 always stays first in boot order, which is latest arch on USB  (I switched from DVD to USB, not that it made any difference ...)

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

It seems that laptops with hybrid uefi/bios are having this problem, you can read many more posts with same problem. I think this is your case, because your laptop has a bios with added support for UEFI, and not an UEFI with support for legacy boot.

The uefi entries can't be saved, thus not being able to boot with linux systems using UEFI. It seems that the UEFI mode is only able to boot windows.

Read this and try it to see if it works.

The board has a hard time remembering the boot options set via the Linux efibootmgr utility, which is the Linux tool that manipulates the firmware's list of installed EFI boot managers. Although I've had the boot manager options "keep" for a few reboots, they often get removed or replaced by references to EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi (Microsoft's EFI boot loader). This is despite the fact that Windows is not installed on this computer. Thus, it's prudent to have a valid boot loader of that name or of the standard EFI default boot loader name, EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi. I initially set an EFI shell program to that name. I could then use a startup.nsh shell script in the root of the ESP to launch ELILO. Since then, I finalized my rEFInd boot manager and installed it in this default boot loader location. (More on these approaches later.)

EDIT: Can you post your laptop model?

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

The OP doesn't have hybrid EFI. On page 1 of this thread, the OP stated that UEFI was enabled by enabling UEFI boot and disabling Legacy BIOS in setup.

That said, if the machine has trouble remembering custom EFI menu entries, the solution suggested will be equally applicable to the OP's problem.

I don't remember if this has been asked but I'd recommend checking that your firmware is up to date in case there has been a fix for some firmware bug which you are running into.

modprobe efivars does not produce any output whether it succeeds or fails. You can check whether it has worked as described in the wiki. Basically,

ls /sys/firmware/efi/vars/

should return a bunch of results. But if efibootmgr is giving you a listing of entries, I think the module must be loaded. Otherwise you wouldn't have access to the menu contents.

Can you just confirm: when you said "that doesn't work either" did you mean that setting the menu entry using bcfg did not work either?

Re: [Solved] confused about lvm uefi partition requirements

Hi, sorry, didn't have time last couple of days, here are my specs:

it's not a laptop, I build an HTPC. Mainboard is DH77DF from Intel. I have latest firmware running.

I CAN log into my system using shell from the installation on USB. modprobe efivars did produce a significant amount of output, I was just wondering why modinfo efivars didn't show any info.

So, I guess, UEFI works on linux, but somehow boot order is overwritten whenever one reboots. I am already thankful for your help because I can at least log into my system and continue installing all requirements needed.

Now I just need a solution for starting the system without manual aid.

Maybe it's this specific Intel motherboard that won't work. I don't know ... sad

So did you try either of the suggested methods?
