Anon have you tried 13.3? is still bugged with shutdown segmentation fault when integrated GPU is active?

No, now i will keep 12.8 for some time as it works. Wanted to try 13.* for TF but now i got some work piled up and dont want to mess too much.

AMD seems to be so slow in solving stuff. I don't update windows/linux drivers now cause everytime they break something.
And i hear Nvidia dropped support for kernel 2.4!  recently.

True... I hope that Steam and linux gaming in general will make the proprietary GPUs support better. At this moment only Intel truly supports his graphical chips under linux...

na smile  i actually was praising nvidia for their non-opensource driver support.
They seem to support for long time but then grass is always greener ...

Hopefully one day open source drivers for all would kick ...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi guys!

I have the 7970m card on a 3630QM with the integrated HD Graphics 4000 card in a (no hardware mux) enduro setup. This is a Clevo p150em btw.

My goal is to get Starcraft II, Dota 2 and Eve Online working as well as is currently possible in linux with this hardware, in order to make some use of this performance beast without windows. I have had a fun week so far getting graphics and switching working in Ubuntu 12.04 but have had no success in trying to play Dota 2. However, Ubuntu isn't really my cup of coffee and debugging and trying to find solutions in their forums convinced me that a switch to a more technical community with a less bloated distro would save me a couple of headaches, so I'm gonna see how far I can get here instead! Arch linux seems like a lovely place, to be honest.

So far in Arch, with catalyst: I've only gotten to a black screen when I startx, (there is no switching ttys if I get this far, reboot is needed). And switching to intel with pxp_switch_catalyst, I get the fatal error message from X, "no screens found". But both gives error messages regarding the intel module, surprisingly!

Below I have pasted both the intel and the catalyst of the Xorg.0.log. There is no xorg.conf. Xorg -configure gives "No devices to configure. Configuration failed."

Base is completely installed from [core] while I have tried catalyst from [core], [catalyst] and [catalyst-stable], with no changes in result. Tried installing, removing and reinstalling all catalyst and intel drivers..

I run with nomodeset. Xorg113. Kernel is 3.7.10-1.

So yea. Any and every comment is appreciated (: what is my best shot? Downgrading kernel? or xorg? trying older catalyst drivers? Older intel drivers?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have the same configuration and I had it kind of working at some point (multimonitor, powersaving and suspend buggy, but else it worked) but the last time I tried it, X would only segfault on start. Maybe you have more luck.
What I did not like was the lack of a method to decide on which gpu to run stuff when already running X. It could have been solved via a hypothetical "amdrun" utility or via a environment variable, but as far as I see it, as soon as you switch to amd, everything will get rendered on the amd card.

I run with nomodeset.

I'm pretty sure this is not a good idea. As far as I am aware intel hasn't had UMS support for a while, so you need modesetting for intel to display your X.

When you want to use the proprietary amd driver, the thing that should not happen is that the radeon kernel module also tries to use modesetting. In fact, it shouldn't do anything at all so the fglrx kernel module will not be disturbed by whatever the radeon module does.
To make sure radeon is not loaded on boot, create some file in /etc/modprobe.d/ with an arbitrary name like /etc/modprobe.d/blacklistradeon.conf and put

install radeon /bin/false

inside. This will prevent radeon from being loaded at all. If you have radeon (if you didn't specifically set it up, you don't) in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf MODULES, remove it as it will be loaded before the modprobe rules as long as the config file is not included in FILES there too.

I'm not sure how exactly it works but as far as I understand it, the best way is using the pxp_switch_catalyst script to change to amd and then reboot. In my experience fglrx/catalyst would randomly not work when not rebooting after trying to switch.
Then you may or may not want to exit X and run "aticonfig --initial" to generate a suitable xorg.conf.

I have not closely looked at how it works, but from what I have seen, the intel kernel driver is supposed to have control of the ttys with kms and stuff, and when you start X, the fglrx X.org driver is loaded instead of the xf86-video-intel X.org driver, but then fglrx is doing some magic stuff with the intel X.org driver and coerces the intel driver to take over the output stuff while the fglrx stuff does the rendering stuff.

So I think this is bothersome:

[ 3366.899] (EE) Failed to load module "intel" (module does not exist, 0)

I think you should have both, xf86-video-intel and intel-dri installed.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi,

I have had similar issues as innsmouthrain had. But then after few hours i fixed segfault and got a message in Xorg.log that Muxless A+I configuration is not supported (I have i7-2670QM intel 3000hd + amd 7690xt on my laptop. I tried 13.3 catalyst). Could anybody confirm that Muxless A+I is not supported?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@Cdh
I changed to setmode=1 for the kernel and reinstalled the intel drivers. Or so I thought... Somewhere in the process of reinstalling drivers over and over I had missed to actually install the intel drivers. The "module does not exist" was indeed a very valid conclusion from X.

So, with the modesetting at 1 for the first time since I installed base I actually got a little bit further. With 'pxp_switch_catalyst intel' and startx I got to see a black screen with a correct-looking resolution (1920x1080), judging from the size of the mouse pointer (!) which however, I can not move. tty switching works though so I simply 'killall xinit' from the tty where I log in with root.

With the pxp switch set to amd I get stuck on a "Loading extension GLX" message and have to long-press my power button. The Xorg.0.log gives a little more info. See them both pasted below.

[ 476.662] (II) Using input driver 'evdev' for 'SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad'

The touchpad works probably better with xf86-input-synaptics than with evdev, just installing it should install the appropriate rules too.

For your amd xorg log I don't see fglrx at all so there is probably something wrong with the xorg.conf. Perhaps doing aticonfig --initial and then aticonfig --px-dgpu helps, who knows.

I haven't found good documentation on that stuff anyway so as I see it this is all largely undocumented and designed to "just work", except it doesn't really.

In this case, however, what you said "just worked". Thanks (: I suppose this could mean that I will sometimes have to run aticonfig --initial between switches - which is not very pretty. It's not a big problem as it could be worked into the switching script. But many small problems piled together can get ugly in the end.

However,

I have the same configuration and I had it kind of working at some point (multimonitor, powersaving and suspend buggy, but else it worked) but the last time I tried it, X would only segfault on start.

Multimonitor, powersaving and suspend are all features that I use and love. If I can not get these to work, it will be a sad loss indeed. Planning to have a USB Monitor from AOC as a secondary monitor which will be interesting in itself. Suspend is important if you're using the computer while commuting for instance, but can be worked around most of the time. It is very handy however, especially if powersaving isn't working.

Also,

What I did not like was the lack of a method to decide on which gpu to run stuff when already running X

.

Not a showstopper but they should support it. I will use my cards in a way to work around it; Boot up in powersaving integrated card; Chat with people, write code and do work, browse the web and do studies (pdf, latex, Octave, etc.) - not performance demanding at all. Take a break; Switch to AMD, screen flickers black for a few seconds (which hopefully isn't very much if you only do it once an hour or less) while restarting X, play performance demanding games, which are usually in fullscreen anyway. Switch back when done.

Of course, the feature would be very nice still. Especially if the above procedure doesn't actually work smoothly but has bugs and needs for more workarounds, etc. I will explore this further if I get that far.

Next, I will get some fancy stuff going like my openbox config, background image and other, more essential stuff, like browsing and audio and my studies and development set-up. After that, start experimenting with 3d acceleration and WINE.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

One monitor worked fine. With two monitors the screens were "wobbly", with pixel rows randomly jumping one row up or down. Kind of usable without compositing, always visible with compositing.

Powersaving was mostly fine except the radeon card never really turned off completely. Even when using intel the fan would randomly spin up for a few seconds/minutes.

Suspend worked, but after resuming there were some strange effects like the fans not spinning down anymore and stuff like that.

As I said: Kind of usable, but buggy. But maybe you have more luck.

With a usb monitor, you'd probably want to use the "xrandr --setprovideroutputsource ..." (may require xorg-xrandr-git from AUR) and that in combination with the proprietary amd driver will be a real adventure I guess.

Just to keep in mind from my experience: If you switch to amd and X won't start, try to reboot, then it probably starts again.

What I also tried and what did NOT work was letting my X run, then go to a tty, switch to amd and start a second X with amd while the first X with intel was still running. I don't see why this shouldn't work in theory but in practice it doesn't, probably because of the magic with the intel driver fglrx/catalyst does. But it would have been an acceptable compromise.

I haven't found much other people having tested this stuff and reporting their experience on the internet, so maybe it was just me.

Interesting. Historically, I have had no need for compositing other than the transparency on my terminal emulator, but this can be done without compositing.

I'm not sure the fan issue with powersaving is actually what it seems. I do think I remember hearing windows users with the same "problem", and it might be on purpose (or at least not solved in windows either), but I will have to investigate.

Constantly spinning fans after a suspend would suck, though. I'll see what I can do about it.

And I am so looking forward to the adventure with xrandr and usb monitor wink

pxp_switch_catalyst does switch xorg.conf (it's turning xorg.conf into a symlink and then pointing it to previously renamed xorg.conf), it just need to have something to work on like xorg.conf with fglrx inside.
It's pretty easy bash script, vim it and check out.

You can turn off radeon card completely when switched to intel, here's more info: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … screte_GPU

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

catalyst 13.3 beta2
is available to download.
As i can see amd has used my method to support 3.7 kernel and copy-pasted my 3.8 kernel patch wink.

There's still no proper xserver 1.14 support, though, command:

nm -C xpic_64a/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so | grep amd_xserver114

returns nothing (you need to run nm on original library, before patching because makepkg is removing debugging symbols)
Like on 13.2 beta 7 i was able to run KDM on xserver 1.14 with this release. Although it's unable to run any composited DE, .xsession-errors is then returning error:

X Error: BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error) 16
  Extension: 128 (Uknown extension)
  Minor opcode: 4 (Unknown request)
  Resource id: 0xbc
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
knotify4: cannot connect to X server :0
unnamed app(1229): Communication problem with "knotify" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" "

On phoronix forums there are some concerns about this release but it looks like amd did changed something:
- a few profiles were modified, there's also new profile for catzilla
- there are some new ARB_debug_group's methods
- there are new variables in amdpcsdb

I've updated catalyst-test@AUR, i'm planning to update repo tomorrow because i don't have time today and i still need (want) to clean pxp's  PKGBUILDs + catalyst_build_module.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok, i've updated some repos:
- [catalyst] to catalyst 13.3 beta 2, i've cleaned many pkgbuilds and catalyst_build_module before updating this. It seems to work fine, files lists are same, just that catalyst_build_module from now on supports only kernels build with proper extramodules support, tested on -ARCH, -ck, -lts and -mainline.
In case of problems let me know, still

[catalyst-13.2-beta7]
Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch

repo is available, just don't use catalyst from it because it was build for 3.7-ARCH, use hook or generator instead;
- [catalyst-stable], [catalyst-hd234k], [catalyst-hd234k-12.4] - there i've updated catalyst (and catalyst-lts if available), which was build for 3.8-ARCH

xorg-server 1.14 landed in [extra] but i'm sure that you know what to do

Are there any errors after trying to switch in dmesg or ~/.xsession-errors ?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey, i am sure this is going to sound super newb but,

during the installation of catalyst and utils from the unofficial repo there is a conflict with xorg-1.4, do I need to backport my xorg server to 1.3 for pacman to install the catalyst and utils?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I'm using an HD5770, and the newest beta really improved things for me.   In TF2, I'm able to run 4x anti-aliasing, HDR, and I'm not seeing the stuttering when encountering transparent textures such as water or a cloaked spy.   Before this driver I had to go with anti-aliasing off.  Thanks for the effort in supporting these releases.

Anyone else notice improvements?

What can i do?
My card is ATI HD 4870, catalyst-hook installed.
Thank you.
P.S.: sorry for my english.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

nomodeset in kernel boot line maybe?
Did it stop working after update? If so maybe try to recompile fglrx module with catalyst-hook (you gonna need linux-headers)

Why would you install xorg 1.14.0 first? It isn't supported by the Catalyst driver.
