UX31A keyboard backlight problem

Problem symptom: Cannot adjust keyboard backlight.

What have I tried? Doing a lot of Google-ing, reading wiki articles and do some trickery.

What have I found out: This laptop uses the asus-wmi-nb kernel module, and the /sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight folder which should exist is not there. All the scripts (including https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/asus-kbd-backlight/) I have found depend on this folder being available. The only LED available is  /sys/class/leds/phy0-led. Changing scripts or manually changing variables in this folder does not change anything of the keyboard backlight.
The rest of the function keys do work, and the keyboard backlight indicator does pop up when pressing fn+f3/f4. Kernel is 3.7.10 from the repositories, GRUB kernel parameters are these:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet pcie_aspm=force drm.vblankoffdelay=1 i915.semaphores=1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 nmi_watchdog=0 acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'"

Any suggestions? Thank you very much.

Re: UX31A keyboard backlight problem

Tried this. Did not work. Updated kernel to 3.8, still nothing.

Sad part is that 3.8 also broke my FN backlight keys (acpi_osi is broken again).

[joris@Joris-Zenbook ~]$ ls -l /sys/class/leds/
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 20 mrt 12:57 phy0-led -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.1/0000:02:00.0/leds/phy0-led

[joris@Joris-Zenbook ~]$ ls -l /sys/class/backlight/
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 20 mrt 12:52 asus-nb-wmi -> ../../devices/platform/asus-nb-wmi/backlight/asus-nb-wmi
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 20 mrt 12:58 intel_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/intel_backlight

Any suggestions on how to fix this? It acctually is the last little quirk this device has with Arch Linux...

Not surprising. acpi_backlight is about the screen backlight, not the keyboard backlight. This is a bit strange that 3.8 killed the screen backlight, despite the acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" argument. I'm somehow glad that I bought the UX32VD instead of the UX31A. Since 3.7 with the acpi_osi argument, everything works fine.
Have you tried removing the acpi_osi argument, and see if the screen backlight works again?
Did the keyboard backlight work at all when you installed arch? When did you buy the zenbook? When did you install arch the first time on it?
What bios version runs on your zenbook?

Tried this. Didn't work out though. The gnome brightness control applet does work though.

Did the keyboard backlight work at all when you installed arch? When did you buy the zenbook? When did you install arch the first time on it?

It worked on Win7. I upgraded to Win8 (clean install), then I didn't get the kb backlight. The power and wireless lights do work though. Installed the newest ATK Package and most other asus/intel drivers.
Arch has the same behaviour. It could be that it is a hardware defect (again... laptop was back for 3 times now, 1 of which was because of kb backlight problems)

Did the keyboard backlight work at all when you installed arch? When did you buy the zenbook? When did you install arch the first time on it?

Bought the Zenbook when it came out back in July. This is my second Arch install (they wipe your disk at the RMA process), and the backlight has worked before.

Remark - the backlight also does not light up in BIOS. I'm getting the nasty feeling I'll have to do an RMA again... sigh.
Thanks for the help so far!
