I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

Hi guys, Im new on Archlinux, I installed it on three computers succesfully, and now Im tryng to install this driver. I read a lot of forums but I cant find a solution for my specific problem.

I downloaded the driver from the original website. I uncompressed it normally and the problem is with make instruction. Im using ArchLinux 64bits

Re: I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

Welcome to Arch Linux.

First, please use BBCode code tags.  I added them for you.  You can edit your post to see how it's done.
Second, make && make install is not the preferred way to do things in Arch.  Are you sure there is not a package in the AUR for your card?

As a sanity check, can you post the output of lspci -nn   (That is two n's, not m.)

Re: I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

thanks for edit and for reply.

Every thread I found on internet said that I have to compile this driver for this specific driver. But these threads were old, maybe there are a package now.

Re: I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

Yeah.   Um, ouch.  That chipset looks like it is problematic.

I was unable to find any packages for that device.  We may have to figure out how to compile that beast.  I may be able to work on that a little tonight (GMT-7).  In the mean time, would you be interested in having this thread moved to 'AUR Issues, discussions, and PKGBUILD requests', or should we leave it here for now?

Re: I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

Hi, the bug hunting took me some time, but your problem is relatively simple. You need the full kernel source,

/home/alberto/Linux/DPO_GPL_RT5592STA_LinuxSTA_v2.6.0.0_20120326/os/linux/../../os/linux/pci_main_dev.c:42:23: error: expected ‘=’, ‘,’, ‘;’, ‘asm’ or ‘__attribute__’ before ‘rt2860_remove_one’

This happens because:

static VOID __devexit rt2860_remove_one(struct pci_dev *pci_dev);

gcc doesn't know what "__devexit" means.
this is defined in include/linux/init.h. For some strange reason, it isn't defined in "/usr/src/linux-<kernel-version>/include/linux". After symlinking "/usr/src/linux-<kernel-version>" to the full kernel source, it compiled without errors on my machine (except those obscure warnings).
____
UPDATE: This was wrong what I wrote. They removed the __devexit defines in 3.8.
According to https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1921951/.  __devexit isn't needed anymore. So, you just need to patch out all references to __devexit in the driver. Probably __devinit too.
UPDATE 2: Here's a patch file to make it 3.8 compatible. No guarantees. Sorry, for posting it here directly.

Yeah.

Yeah, I have no problem to move it, especially if you take your time to help me(and everybody who have problems with this card). Ask me everything you need. Thanks a lot smile

dontbugme wrote:

Hi, the bug hunting took me some time, but your problem is relatively simple. You need the full kernel source,

/home/alberto/Linux/DPO_GPL_RT5592STA_LinuxSTA_v2.6.0.0_20120326/os/linux/../../os/linux/pci_main_dev.c:42:23: error: expected ‘=’, ‘,’, ‘;’, ‘asm’ or ‘__attribute__’ before ‘rt2860_remove_one’

This happens because:

static VOID __devexit rt2860_remove_one(struct pci_dev *pci_dev);

gcc doesn't know what "__devexit" means.
this is defined in include/linux/init.h.

Thanks for your reply, I'll try to apply this patch. This is my fist time applying a patch. I read a little and I think it's only this instruction:

$ patch -p1 -i pkgname.patch

Where pkgname.patch is the file with text that you put above. Is the file pci_main_dev what I need to patch?

EDIT: Oh! great!! I have another different error! I read about the new error. so, I expect I can find the solution smile

Thanks a lot, dontbugme. I'll try to compile everything succesfully before tag this post solved.

Hmm, ok thats strange that you've got an additional error. But if you say you found information about this error, good luck.

Re: I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

Thanks guys, I solved the problem about compilation. Now, I think im so close to get it working but I don't know what's happening.

Here is the instructions I did:

$ iwconfig
ra0       Ralink STA  ESSID:""  Nickname:"RT2860STA"
          Mode:Auto  Frequency=2.462 GHz  Bit Rate:1 Mb/s
          RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Link Quality=100/100 Signal level:-50 dBm Noise level:-50 dBm
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

lo        no wireless extensions.

enp4s0    no wireless extensions.

So, it seems ra0 is my interface. I edited /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpla_supplicant.conf

network={
    ssid="mywifissid"
    psk="mypass"
}
# ip link set ra0 up
# iwconfig ra0 essid mywifissid
# wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i ra0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
rfkill: Cannot open RFKILL control device

# dhcpcd ra0
dhcpcd[4102]: version 5.6.7 starting
dhcpcd[4102]: ra0: waiting for carrier
dhcpcd[4102]: timed out

I tried with networkmanager using kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement(KDE) and I can't select wireless tab, it appears on grey color.

I tried with wicd and it search for wireless connections, but I can't connect using WPA key(It says bad password). I searched for a solution and I uninstalled both networkmanager and kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement, but wicd doesn't connect anyway.

I don't know what to do now.

Ideas?

Re: I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

Alright, as promised, somewhat delayed, here my created pkgbuild https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rt5592sta_linux/. Sorry, the name is proably not the best one. Some things are a bit hacky due to the moronic makefile. Had to patch a few of them, eg:

make

installs a file named tftpboot to root (despite that beeing moronic already, but I ignored the path for now) - and moved that to the install section -  instead of installing it when invoking

make install

which installs the kernel module to the modules directory. Since its my first created PKGBUILD, sorry, it probably isn't perfect, but it seems to compile and build / install perfectly.

Re: I cant install PCE-N53 Asus wireless card

No problem. Glad I could help. Although I have to admit, I don't have the time to maintain this PKGBUILD (not to mention I don't even have this card). It would be good, if there was someone to take over mainenance of the PKGBUILD. Would be unfortunate to orphan this package shortly after submitting it.
