*** The nvidia-304xx 304.88-1 driver solved it! ***
Hi,
After an update (pacman -Syu) I cannot exit X to the tty I have started it from, with startx. If I exit the win-manager, I get a black screen with no video input -insted of the tty prompt I have started it from. When in the X session if I ctrl+alt+F1 (or F2 OR F3 ect...) I get the same, black screen no video input but, alt+F1 gets me back to the X session OK.
Booting to the tty is OK. Without starting X I get a tty & I can switch with alt+F1 up to F6 to all ttys.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks!

Have you seen this thread?
You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

I also thought about this thread.

Thanks but... :-)
This box is running a long time with the same setup: display card & NVIDIA driver, just after the recent update it all hapend. I have tried to add the Uvesafb/v86d package and also to remove GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep OR just change it to =text -as I so in other posts, it all failed.
I'm trying to avoid switching back to the Nouveau driver so I do not know if it will fix the problem. If I do not get a clue soon, I will do that & post the outcome.
Thanks agen!

The 304-84 release of the nvidia driver breaks the virtual tty console access.
If you need it you have no other choice than using the 'nouveau' driver.
See https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … 84-driver/
as well as other threads here.

Yep, awaiting the fix :-(

I'm having the same issue with an nvidia geforce 7800 gtx card. Is reverting to an earlier version of the nvidia-304-xxx drivers a possibility?

If you choose this option, you have to do it yourself with the old 304-64 driver.
This may work for some time with new linux kernel and xorg server, but cannot be a long term solution (perhaps a longer one if you use the lts linux kernel).
If you don't need high 3D acceleration performances and/or have an efficient cooling device for your hardware, the nouveau driver may be a better choice for you.

Ha! I thought it would be a long wait for the nvidia driver to get fixed - but I was wrong. Happy to get over this one. :)
Edit: Ctrl-Alt-F1-F6 now launches tty 1-6, etc. However, logging out to slim still crashes on the second attempt, as before. Still need the hack (killall --user $USER -TERM etc) in slim.conf to avoid this.
