Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

I can hear an mp3 even if I turn my loudspeakers volume to 0. Any solution to fix it?

Using alsa or oss?  What does alsamixer/ossmixer show?

I use alsa. All masrter volumes are at 100%.

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

On one of my systems, I experience this. I think of the volume levels on this machine kind of like a backloght that doesn't black out. There is a difference to this machine between the volume levels (like setting brightness levels) which can go high or low but not off, and the mute function (like hitting the monitor power) which turns off the volume altogether.

Why this one machine works markedly different than my others, I have no idea. I think you might have to learn to use the mute button.

Do you use alsaequal? I have noticed that it bypasses the PCM and so I have to use the master volume when it is enabled.

On an unfamiliar machine, I have to always play with the mixer to figure out which one actually puts out the sound to the desired jack.  I have one that has a built in speaker, but it doesn't work under linux.  It doubles as a mic and output, so I have to use a headset to hear what's playing.

This might be the reason, because unless the output is turned off, or is not the right output jack, sound will most likely come through.  I'm surmising this is the case.

I do not use alsaequal. The jack is the right one (green). Only in that jack I have sound. Should I lower master volumes from 100%?

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

There's one that changes from front, back, center or whatever and changing it will cause it to be more amplified than the other options.
However if all of the volumes are at 100%, I'd think you'd be wanting to hear sound.  Unless there is an application that is making sound that's not supposed to.  That's a different problem.  Does your speakers have manual volume control?

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

Yes speakers have manual control which work, except the problem I mention: when I put volume to 0 I hear sound of the application that runs at this time, if I listen to mp3 I can hear the mp3, if I have a site with music open, I can hear this music.

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

Maybe you have them plugged into a line out that is fixed on volume, instead of a mixer controllable, regular speaker out.  Does it change when you do something with the mixer controls?

No, it is mixer controllable, I can increase the volume. I just can't turn it off.

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

@hariskar, WonderWoofy,
Same here. I hear sound even master volume is set to zero, until i mute it. It's not annoying me actually. And as far as i remember, it's not a new thing, at least for me.
Made a quick search about it :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … +bug/39477
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … +bug/16454

FYI, i have ALC888 Audio controller and using alsa.

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

It is not a bug. It is how it is supposed to work. To put it in a perspective so you guys can understand, when you have "0%" in your mixer, it means 0 amplifying, it doesn't mean you don't get any sound, it just means that it is not amplified. And that is where the mute button comes in.

If it didn't work this way, why would we put mute buttons anyway?

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

I don't know, I turn down PCM or Master or any of them, and it pretty much squelches it.  I used OSS on the same hardware and it would allow me to run external and internal speaker systems independently which was kinda neat.  But that's the only occurance of anything like that I've had.  I spend more time trying to find a working jack with the most output gain by going through the mixers than finding that they are all turned off and still getting sound.

Re: Loudspeakers volume is at 0 but I still hear sound

I don't think you are making it very clear what the problem is?
Are saying the volume control on master?
OR volume control on your speakers?
You should get no sound with the master at 0
If the master is at max and the speakers at 0 and you still hear sound then its the speakers at fault or they are overloaded as Linux tends to amplify the signal more than windows

This is the case. So, it is a normal behavior?
