No USB when booting with UEFI

Ok here is a strange one that I have been trying to figure out for days and I just narrowed it down a little more today.  I have an HP Folio 9470.  If I install Arch via UEFI and my usb ports do not work.  For example I have a usb-stick that has a LED on and it never lights up, never shows up in any logs that it was inserted and of course never shows up in /dev/disk...  If I install it the exact same way but use bios instead, all is well.  It lights up and I can mount it no problem.  I have tried lots of things that were suggested for "USB not working" but none of them do anything.

To me this seems like a EFI problem with the Laptop, but I thought may be someone else has had the same problem and was able to find a workaround.  Any ideas...???

Thanks.

Re: No USB when booting with UEFI

Check your firmware for USB-related options. On one ASUS board I own, for instance, there are options to initialize just USB keyboards and mice or to scan for bootable USB devices. It's conceivable that such an option could affect Linux's subsequent ability to activate USB devices.

Also, do you have any other USB devices (keyboards, mice, scanners, printers, etc.)? If so, which ones work and which ones don't?

Another question: If you plug the device into a different USB port, can you see it? Some boards have multiple USB controllers, and it's possible the problem is isolated to just one of them. This wouldn't explain the BIOS vs. EFI difference, but it might provide a workaround.

Probably firmware bug. Does USB even appear in lspci output?

srs5694 - I did not try USB with anything other than pen-drives and DVD.  None of the ports work.

mich41 - Yes.

Re: No USB when booting with UEFI

Try checking the manufacturer's site for a firmware update. If that doesn't work, track down a USB mouse or something to try it; even if you don't plan to use it in the long term, it's useful diagnostic data.
