twiddeling with the touchpad does sometimes start browser and mail

Strange. While doing something else, using the touchpad of my Fujitsu E-Series old laptop, arch starts the standard browser and the mail application.
Any idea?

Of which Windows Manager / Desktop Environment are we speaking?

If you have a touchpad, you probably have installed synaptics (xf86-input-synaptics), but from the sound of it you haven't configured it for anything special.  You can check the configuration file at:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf
