Went through beginner's guide without a hitch, yet after reboot it isn't connecting to the internet without dhcpcd
completely normal rc.conf, using eth0 and definitely still eth0
the laptop is 12 years old though, happened 3 out of 3 different installs
Only one other identical post from 2007 with no answer

It seems your're running a really ooooooold version of arch, because there isn't a "rc.conf" in arch for a while since it completely moved to systemd.
