Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Does anyone know what amd-microcode and I think amd-ucode or something like that means?
I get an error saying it's missing early on during start-up.
I don't remember it, because it flies so fast by I can't write it down.
If there's any log where I could find this error please let me know. It's the first thing that gets written after grub.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Optional updates for the cpu. They are applied on every single boot and are not persistent between reboots. A few weeks ago arch changed something so that the kernel module is loaded by default and spits out that message but it shouldn't break anything at all.

I think dmesg | grep microcode should show the messages and more information.

This package contains the missing microcode, dunno what it's needed for.

This problem of seg fault on shutdown in dual gfx systems when using integrated graphics seems to be solved in 13.3 beta 3.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

xf86-video-ati been going well since xorg114, but sick of not being able to run anything 3D... downgraded xorg-server, but I can't get catalyst working. Xorg can't find screens.

Before xorg114 came out I had the same problem when trying catalyst-test from AUR, I just stayed with catalyst-total from AUR to avoid problems but now that fix won't work.

I've got an AMD HD7950, is this a known issue? Getting logs etc. when Xorg doesn't work is painful so trying to avoid doing that hmm

Both fglrx and radeon modules were loaded - reading backwards in this thread suggest radeon should not be. Will try blacklisting.
Edit: Not having radeon running did not help.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

No. I'm using the same xorg conf I've been using with catalyst (before xorg114 happened) and ati so I didn't think it was necessary.

fglrxinfo can't find any screens either, and that runs 'higher up' then Xorg?

[username@hostname ~]$ aticonfig --initial
Found fglrx primary device section
Unable to find any supported Screen sections

Are you sure you downgraded everything correctly? Check the Wiki again for xorg113 repo and retrace your steps.

I've removed the better part of everything and tried redoing it. As I said I had similar issues with xorg113 before 114, when I tried to use the then catalyst-test over catalyst, I just reverted back to catalyst.

I've just updated [catalyst] and [catalyst-stable] repos with those minor amd's changes.

I will be AFK for about 5 days, I should return on Tuesday.

@deags:
If xorg.conf is present `aticonfig --initial` isn't creating completely new xorg.conf, instead it's trying to work on the present one.
Since both aticonfig and xorg are telling that there's something wrong with xorg.conf (screen) - it must be true then.
Remove or move xorg.conf to other location and try again with aticonfig, eventually fix your xorg.conf

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Ok thanks, that's not intuitive.
I did as you suggested, on trying to startx it gets so far as to 'Initialising GLX' then freezes completely, I have to pull power to restart. Nothing suss in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, though it sounds like a xorg.conf issue despite removing it and aticonfig --initial. Should fglrxinfo detect screens, if there is no Xorg server running?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I haven't been able to stop my GPU fan. But powertop shows no fglrx until I start any program that uses 3D graphics.
Still my GPU seems to transfer quite a lot of data, because my mb tells that it (it, the mb, not gpu) has temperature of 59°C, which is about 13°C more than my CPU... So north/south bridge is quite loaded... CPU is on 0%...
I'll have to make sure that it isn't the lack of ventilation in my case. Anyway this was the report I promised, Vi0L0. wink More to come...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi!

I have sony vpcsb 4v9r with a ATI Radeon HD 6470M (+  Intel HD 3000, hybrid graphics).

There is xorg 13 and catalyst on my sustem (both from Vi0L0's repos)

catalyst-hook 13.3-4
catalyst-utils-pxp 13.3-4
lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp 13.3-4

The KMS is enabled, because the hybrid system use intel driver too.

The general issue that I have no display configuration in amdcccle even when it runs from root (kdesu).
ae85caaf9daf.jpg

So, I try to set up "BIG Desktop" with a hdmi monitor for several days smile. Both monitors work fine in clone mode. But if I change Position one of monitors I get artefacts.

1. If i use kde system setting -> display and monitor and set for hdmi-connected Position: for example right of LVDS1 I get some blinking on two monitors and wrong window positions. As I understand it use xrandr 1.4 which installed on my desktop:

libxrandr 1.4.0-1
randrproto 1.4.0-1
xorg-xrandr 1.4.0-1

2. if I use arandr (visual front end for XRandR 1.2 as stated in man-page) I get the same issue.

3. the same if I use xrandr command.

4. I try to disable xinerama and xrandr12 as it as stated in wiki:

aticonfig --set-pcs-str="DDX,EnableRandR12,FALSE"

but in my xorg log I see this:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |grep -i rand
[     4.531] Initializing built-in extension RANDR
[     7.402] (II) fglrx(0): RandR 1.2 support is enabled!

[     7.462] (II) fglrx(0): RandR 1.2 enabled, ignore the following RandR disabled message.
[     8.709] (--) RandR disabled
[     9.085] (II) fglrx(0): Restoring Recent Mode via PCS is not supported in RANDR 1.2 capable environments

as I understand fglrx ignored "DDX,EnableRandR12,FALSE" option.

my xorg.conf for now:

So, if I disable ati by command

pxp_switch_catalyst intel

everything works fine.

I have to change monitor configuration on fly, because it's laptop and I can't set configuration permanently in xorg.conf. I have one monitor on work one more at home and it should possible to config (enable, disable, change position, use only LVDS) without X restart.
Is it possible on my hardware with catalyst?

P.S. amdcccle show my card as AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series (but I have HD 6470M).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I think it's great that people spend their time to help others.

Unfortunately I'm a little to incompetent to get hybrid graphics working.

I've got a laptop (HP Pavilion dv6) with switchable graphics (AMD/intel) running Arch 64 bit with Awesome window manager. It boots the Intel-driver by default (which I would like to keep). I also have have set switchable graphics to <static> in BIOS.

I've downgraded some stuff and downloaded the catalyst-total-pxp 13.1-5 from the AUR, and after running

# aticonfig --initial

and

# pxp_switch_catalyst amd

I startx and get the error in the log:

[  2067.683] (EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section.

When I delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf I get no errors and X starts normally. exept openGL does not work:

~ $ glxinfo
name of display: :0
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 154 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

~ $ fglrxinfo
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)

Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

I suspect it doesn't load GLX, perhaps because by default my system has xorg.conf split into the folder xorg.conf.d .

cards: (lspci | grep VGA):

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Whistler XT [AMD Radeon HD 6700M Series]

program versions:
xf86-video-ati 1:7.1.0-1
xf86-video-intel 2.20.18-1
xf86-video-vesa 2.3.2-2
xorg 113

I tried installing catalyst-dkms(13.1-2), but that didn't help a bit, so i removed it again.

I hope I've provided enough information.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi SquarePony,

I have no any problem with glx/opengl. Everything works fine, xorg log is not contain any error even if I start with amd driver.

The issue is "big desktop" configuration with hdmi-connected monitor on fgrlx driver.

Do you have monitor config section in amdcccle?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

When I run amdcccle I get the following error:

There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following.

No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the AMD driver appropriate for you AMD hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

also -to avoid miscomunications- I have a problem myself, I am not helping you (though I would if I could).

SquarePony,

I think you sustem not have fglrx module load or wrong xorg.conf.

Please check this:

1. I think you have to remove xf86-video-ati package from you system.

2. the command

lsmod |grep fglrx

should show output like this:

fglrx                5161075  0
amd_iommu_v2            7399  1 fglrx
button                  4701  2 i915,fglrx

I use hook way (catalyst-hook package). As I know catalyst-total-pxp has hook-way too.

you should use

mkinitcpio -p linux

for generate fglrx kernel module.
You /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
should have fglrx in HOOKS section.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi jamm,
I did what you said, however instead of having a file called mkinitcpio, I have the folder /etc/mkinitcpio.d/
Which contain example.preset and linux.preset. Neither of which contain the word 'hook'

(By the way: my xorg.conf file is a folder called xorg.conf.d)

Also, I get the predicted output with lsmod.
