Which is the best virtualization mode for Ubuntu x86/64 guest?

Hello,

Sorry, I cannot decide how can I virtualize the best way an x86 ubuntu guest.
But second time I want virtualize a 64 bit environment for ubuntu, with archlinux 64 bit.
I seen https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ca … ualization, but I don't know which is give for me the best speed for http://www.linuxcnc.org/ iso file.
Mine problem is with virtualbox have fixed memory size, and graphical isnt same good as host machine.

VMware
great graphics performance
gui based
proprietary
very often has problems with latest kernels
limited choice of hosts and guests

Virtualbox
reasonable graphics performance
gui based
opensource
maintained by Oracle, some functionality only in proprietary version (not sure if this is still true)
somewhat limited host/guest choices

Qemu
mediocre/bad graphics performance
great performance in almost all other fields
cli-based, very flexible
opensource
very broad selection of host/guests

Thanks, and I ask what has it with lcx container, or same have with chroot? I do not understood how working these softwares, but I think if I have Linux, how can I run Linux applications from another distribution and 32 bit on 64 bit?

Basically you can do the same things with all methods, but the major difference is how much isolation is needed between the systems.

(best isolation on top)
Multiple physical systems
Multi-boot
Virtual Machine
Linux Containers (LXC)
chroot
multilb
Anything that can be done in one of those can also be done in the methods higher on the list.

Running 32-bit programs on a 64-bit install that share the same OS : multilib or higher (chroot is also often used for this).

running programs that need another OS/distro then the host : VM

I'm curious what you mean by this. As I understand it, on its own Qemu is just an emulator. But when KVM is involved it "becomes" a hypervisor just like VBox and VMware.

Do you mean "level one" (bare-metal) hypervisors?

Yeah, i didn't want to complicate things more then needed so felt it was best to leave Xen, HyperV , vSphere etc out of the comparison.

If you are just looking for something really basic and light, don't forget about systemd-nspawn. Though it is not the same as an instance or virtualbox, it can accomplish quite a bit.
