Cannot install from CD Lz..... no kernel image

I am trying to install arch on some older hardware.  I downloaded the torrent image, and downloaded the one from a site to see if I was perhaps getting a bad iso, but nothing changed.

The machine comes up, past the bios, it tells me it is loading the archiso image, then I get a screen full of

Lz...............: Lz..............:

, etc.  If I hit enter, I get a quick flash about not finding a kernel image, then a screen of numbers like

[14;5H[20;5H[0:

, and hitting enter just gives me more screens of this stuff.

I tried this with an earlier release and got the same thing; I got sidetracked and just got back to installing so I downloaded the most recent release.

I suspected a bad cd drive, but hiren's boot cd starts up fine.  Burned an install image to usb and booted that, same problem.

What is going on?

Re: Cannot install from CD Lz..... no kernel image

To test if the ISO is broken check its MD5/SHA1!!!

These are the correct values from here https://www.archlinux.org/download/

MD5: b5eb597d730ca236950ab17b6c489ef2
SHA1: af3f27628871d3018d50d9528194b06cc9573e96

If it is OK, you can post the PC specs. It can give us some light!

What ^^ said and also tell us how exactly you created the CD or USB media. Which programme did you use to burn it, for example? Did you verify that the CD had burnt correctly or that the USB medium was prepared correctly?

If you have access to another machine, also try booting that with the same CD/USB.

CLI Paste | How To Ask Questions

Arch Linux | x86_64 | GPT | EFI boot | refind | stub loader | systemd | LVM2 on LUKS

Re: Cannot install from CD Lz..... no kernel image

Thought I hit "post" on my last one so if a duplicate shows up, I apologize...

CD's were burned with windows image burner
USB with win32diskimager

I did not do a verify on the CD or USB.

MD5/SHA1 check out on both CDs

This is an older Dell Vostro 220, E2200 CPU, 2G Memory, 74G Seagate hard drive.

I did finally try it on another machine, and it booted right up.

Re: Cannot install from CD Lz..... no kernel image

Well, i don't see any weird setup that would make arch ISO crazy.

What you can try is to enter bios and reset it to defaults, you can also try to update its bios from http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/ … 0220/#BIOS and also try to boot arch x86 and x64 to see if the problem exists in both.

EDIT: One more thing, if your PC only has PATA devices you need to add

pcie_aspm=force

to your kernel boot line.
