Underground Linux

I was surfing DistroWatch the other day and noticed, on the top of the page, a description for Underground Linux, an Arch-Based distrobution. And it begged me to ask the question, what's new with this? I looked all over their web-site and didn't see any difference, other than it came with a customized verson of kde. Anyone know what's new about this?

Also, beggs me to ask, why do people make slight modifications to a distro? I mean, isn't the original just good enough. Wait, I know the answer to that one. It's all part of what makes Linux great. Open Source.

I was just glad to see that Arch is getting a following.

It's the best around, and nothings ever going to keep her down.

I think underground just installs a preconfigured version of arch... i think this is a good thing for arch.. its like debian and then the many easy to install customisations of it.

anyway, im going to download it and give it a go.

Anyway, to answer Deux's question, it says on the page what the differences are! Basically, it's more optimised out-of-the-box. ArchCK by default - nice. Ships with Gutza too - will appeal to the newbies.

The nice part is that Underground appears to have started life as a Debian spin-off, but the lead dev preferred Arch and so started afresh. Go Arch!

hm. nice I was very surpised to stumble on this one over at distrowatch. Maybe I should give it a try and pretend I'm an old distro-hopper again just for kicks

I think rather than saying it's a "linux distribution" it'd be more fitting to call it an "Arch Linux distribution".

I found it a bit interesting how underground came to be Arch-based by reading the discussion here;

I didn't really notice what the differences were on the page, other than it being a more newbie friendly version of Arch. Guess I just didn't read all the way through, I saw it was based off Arch and got so excited that everything else was a blur. I do think this is a good form of flattery for imho the best distro out there money can and can't buy. Or.. money shouldn't have to buy.

Do we know how many distro's are based on Arch?

Are there any official sub distro's (like does the Arch64 project count as part of Arch or a seperate entity?)

Check out www.distrowatch.com

They have a "how independent is your distrobution" section somewhere on the page, it says how many (registered with them) are based off arch. I think it was only a few. I mean, arch is based off Crux.. well.. sort of now anyway.

I think it's a good idea. It's a nice way to introduce the Arch way, layout, and package management system to people who don't want to or can't spend time configuring

I only found out about their use of guzuta today, when I was reading the pdf and thought: "oh, that screenshot looks familiar...". Ehehe, go figure, it was guzuta.
