Re: Card reader don't work on my Asus r500v.

(1) Update your system. With kernel 3.8 your problem should be gone.
(2) If (1) does not work, search the internet for rts_bpp.tar.bz2 or rts-bpp-dkms_1.1_all.deb and everything written "around" it.
Try to install the dkms version manually. You may need to do some extra reading.

My Asus did not detect the card reader without (2) until (1).

If an update is needed, be sure to reboot into the new kernel.  Then check if devices are created under /dev/sd*

Re: Card reader don't work on my Asus r500v.

I've searched the web and come across the same old sites about bug 971876:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/971876
http://step4wd.com/2013/01/26/fix-realt … ultrabook/

I've visited the www.realtek.com.tw site - they've got rts5229 and rtl5209 driver packages for linux which include rtsx_pci moduls.

I've checked the AUR page for rts_bpp you mentioned. The maintainer/submitter says, "I just updated my system and this driver is not needed anymore. Since kernel 3.8 it works out of the box with driver rtsx_pci. So this package won't be updated anymore." The quotation is dated March 19.
------------
I have the same output of

lspci | grep -i realtek

as yours:

04:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 5289 (rev 01)
04:00.2 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 0a)

My rts modules are

lsmod |grep rts
rtsx_pci_ms 7322 0
memstick 7528 1 rtsx_pci_ms
rtsx_pci_sdmmc 14260 0
mmc_core 91956 2 mmc_block,rtsx_pci_sdmmc
rtsx_pci 21780 2 rtsx_pci_ms,rtsx_pci_sdmmc

and I installed

pacman -Q udisks2
udisks2 2.0.1-1

Originally, I installed rts_bpp by downloading the debian package from http://planet76.com/drivers/realtek/rts … .1_all.deb, unpacking it and installing manually. I needed to do "dkms install...", beacause the process was never finished fully after a kernel update. Two weeks ago I noticed I didn't need to "dkms install" because the card was already read. This only confirms the words of the AUR package maintainer, coudu.

My Asus is K55VM, but it is probably just and alias for R500V.

If nothing works try manual installation of the latest package from realtek.com.tw:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow … Down=false

Re: Card reader don't work on my Asus r500v.

I encountered the same issue:

1. When a card was inserted, error -110 appeared in dmesg, and the card wasn't recognized.
2. I could not compile rts_bpp, because of compilation errors.

The fix:

1. Download rts_bpp.tar.bz2 from launchpad
2. Extract archive, edit rtsx.c:
2.1. Remove __devinit from rtsx_probe in line 893
2.2. Remove __devexit from rtsx_remove in line 1048
2.3. Extract rtsx_remove from __devexit_p() in line 1074
3. Compile with "make"
4. As root, make install
5. Blacklist rtsx_pci in /etc/modprobe.d/rtsx_blacklist.conf (add "blacklist rtsx_pci")
6. 'modprobe rts_bpp'
7. run mkinitcpio -p linux (I'm not entirely sure this is necessary, but I run it, so I'm including it here).
8. Restart the machine
9. You're good to go.

EDIT: I have to say, I'm not too sure on how "correct" this fix is, so I've kept a record of what I did in order to be able to reverse it when it is fixed upstream. I recommend doing the same. I used advice from this thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7295202.html.

Re: Card reader don't work on my Asus r500v.

I had the same problem (110 error in dmesg), and after hours of research, all solutions tried before didn't work (An other solution worked before, but the new Kernel version broke it). Caligula's answer is exactly the solution, and it works for Ubuntu as well as for ArchLinux (I confirm that the last command was useless in my case)  !

Thanks a lot Caligula ! (Sorry for putting this 3 months old topic up, but it's the only valid solution I saw in the internet, so it was important for me to tell it works !)
