GPUs and open source drivers

I'm asking myself a simple question: currently, what graphics card has the best performance when used with open-source drivers?

I've used intel graphics for a while now, and while they work great, performance is modest. I know NVidia is great when used with their proprietary drivers, but I'd like to stick to open-source. So what is the card that has the best performance when used with the free drivers?

Intel for sure... though that is not what I think you are asking.

Edit: Regarding this lacking performance you speak of, what is it that you do with your machine that requires such intense graphics power?  I ask because the newest generation Ivy Bridge Intel HD4000 is much faster than even the Sandy Bridge HD3000.

Re: GPUs and open source drivers

well he's trying to compare the likes of mid-end and high end AMD/Nvidia.

Re: GPUs and open source drivers

While Intel puts a lot of work into their drivers I heard they are still missing important features and aren't really bug free. On the Steam for Linux forums the people reporting graphic glitches and artifact often had Intel drivers.

If you wan't the most FPS while still using open source drivers you probably have to buy a high end AMD card and use it with the open source drivers. Dedicated graphics are simply faster than Intel iGPUs to begin with.
