[SOLVED] CPU1 started up but did not get a callout

Hi guys,

I've had this problem for the last few kernel updates, or at least I've only noticed it since then.

Basically the first message on boot that I see is "smpboot: CPU1: Not responding" and doing a grep of dmesg shows the error shown in this thread title.

I'm kinda tearing my hair out, I've tried the kernel 3.8.2 from Testing, downgrading to the last few kernel updates I still had in pacman cache, I've tried the linux-lts (3.0.x) as well...the problem persists. I'm unsure why the problem is still there even with the linux-lts kernel as I know until recently I've had no such troubles. I'm essentially running a single core CPU at the moment, as CPU1 isn't running/recognised.

Ubuntu 12.04 on the same machine does not have this problem however :S That OS is running 3.2.x series kernel, but I still wonder if there's something else I'm missing. It can't just be the kernel version?

Ubuntu tends to use a heavily patched kernel, try a live distro with a more vanilla kernel ?


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Indeed, I tried Fedora/Fuduntu which has a 3.6.x kernel and it has the same problem.

So you may be right about the patched Ubuntu kernel.

Weird.. today after a restart, still on the same standard 3.7.10-1-ARCH kernel...and both my CPU cores are back :S

Kinda strange, the next restart will be telling (I tend to go days without rebooting though, but I had tried heaps of reboots once this problem appeared). Not complaining having full power restored for now though.

The issue resurfaced some days ago but it is now solved.

Unfortunately I can't find the Ubuntu forum link I dug up for the life of me which led me to this clue, but basically the entire cause of the problem was my Logitech G110 keyboard. Or rather, it's built-in USB-hub (I never use the extra ports anyway).

So I swapped it out for an old-school beige Acer USB keyboard and the problem is completely gone. Not exactly ideal, but at least the problem is gone and I have full consistent CPU power.
Interesting it never happens in Ubuntu, I guess one of their bazillion patches solves it or perhaps it's to do with the difference in the init systems, but I can't say for sure.
