On certain types of files. Most likely is X that crashes because when i try to enlightenment_remote -restart it from a terminal i get a message about d_bus and X.
It works on .mp4 & .mkv but crashes with .ogg .mpg. Haven't tried anything else. Also crashes when i double click a .mpg file.
Any ideas.

Bump cause i want to solve this.
Could someone that has video preview working flawlessly provide a list of the gstreamer packages he has installed?

Have you tried the ffmpeg gstremer plugin?

You don't have the good and ugly plugins installed, only the libs. Try that.

Fixed thanks.
Maybe ronald must add more dependencies on the e17 package. For stupid people like me.

Same issue for me, uninstalled all gstreamer stuff that doesn't start with gstreamer0.10 as suggested, rebuilt efl / e from AUR git-pkgs, doesn't work. Avi's don't have video thumbnail, but preview popup has sound. Ogg's do have a thumbnail, but e freezes when previewed (popup doesn't even get time to load properly). Sound files don't play when previewed.
gstreamer pkg's installed:
gstreamer0.10
gstreamer0.10-bad
gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins
gstreamer0.10-base
gstreamer0.10-base-plugins
gstreamer0.10-good
gstreamer0.10-good-plugins
gstreamer0.10-python
gstreamer0.10-ugly
gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins

I use the official packages and not AUR/git stuff.

Wait, you're using the git package from the AUR? I've been having trouble with this off and on, so I switched to the VLC backend. Been much more stable for me.

Aaah, I had that installed, but missed the proper way to enable it. Your comment on the AUR page was very informative. Thanks. Audio files still don't play, but maybe that's not even meant to be, don't know.

I don't think audio files have previews. Or at least it doesn't work in the official packages.
BTW another think i noticed. Do all the videos that get a preview have a slider under them??

Yes, but I can't reach it because the preview exits when you leave the icon . I vaguely remember that being discussed on irc or in the mailing list, there was a reason, I forgot.

Scimmia may have a better answer, but as I see it this preview stuff is buggy because of either gstreamer or the way efl works with gstreamer. The repo packages for efl have gstreamer support enabled by default, so you'll need to build efl yourself to disable gstreamer and build emotion_generic_players which can bring vlc support. One (easy) way to do that is to use Scimmia's git-packages from AUR, following his simple instructions on the AUR page for emotion_generic_players-git. But as you can read above, this will not solve everything. At least e won't crash/freeze.

Strange issues, when I've used enlightenment (same version) packaged by Bodhi Linux team I've never had this issue: what would be the difference?
Maybe I'll wait Scimmia's suggest... I've not understood what packages I have to remove (if any) and what rebuild: I have to ue all enlightenment git packages? What version is? 0.17.1 or the svn "0.18"?
Thank you for the reply

Unfortunately, I don't have a good suggestion. Since you said you don't have the problem in Bodhi, I'll try to catch Jef91 next time I see him on IRC and see if he does anything differently when building Emotion or Enlightenment. It could just be a difference in versions of gstreamer or something since they follow the Ubuntu LTS.
If you want to build it yourself, you don't have to go to the -git versions of EFL and Enlightenment, which are v1.7.99 and v0.17.99 (e18). The PKGBUILD for the official package is here: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … es/emotion
As you can see, gstreamer is specifically enabled and xine and vlc specifically disabled. You can make whatever changes you want and rebuild the package with makepkg. There's no separate emotion_generic_players because that's a change that was made for the upcoming EFL 1.8.
If you do want to convert to the -git versions, you'll want efl-git, elementary-git, and enlightenment17-git. They will conflict with the packages that need removed, so all you'd need to do is build and install them, Pacman will take care of it from there.
Edit to mention that I've heard talk here and there of converting the gstreamer backend to use gstreamer 1.0 instead of 0.10. No idea if this will happen in the near future or not, but I'm hoping that will alleviate these issues if it happens.

Are you using E18-git packages? How much stable are they? maybe I can use them, it seems the easyest solution...
...or wait if Jeff will tell you something
Thank you!
