I have a 8TB lvm+mdadm raid 5 array consisting of 5 2TB disks . A few months ago I purchased another disk for it, rather then grow the raid with it I decided to leave it as a spare.
I'm not sure how, but the spare disk became part of the array at some point. Instead of showing up as a spare it's marked as active and the Array size has increased to 10TB.
I haven't grown the lvm volume on it and there's some material out that that suggests I can shrink the array to the original 8TB size then remove the disk from it. The information isn't complete though so I'm very hesitant to try the process. Can anyone with experience on this offer any insight on the proper procedure for recovering my spare disk?
Once I've recovered the spare disk I plan to convert it to raid6 with the spare.
