SSD too slow ?

Hi ! I recently bought a Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series of 256 GB
The read speed may be around 500Mb/sec according to samung : http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memo … Z-7PD256BW

But my speed is around to 200MB/sec according to "hdparm -t", how can I solve it ? I use a PCI card to use the Sata3 ports !
PS : I haven't any open prgramms when I do the test.

Thanks !

Re: SSD too slow ?

First: the 500 Mb/s is the theoretical Maximum. You'll probably never reach this speed under practical conditions.

Second: The PCI Card could be a bottleneck.

Re: SSD too slow ?

Thanks for your answer ! I know the 500Mbits are theorical but there is a big difference anyway !
I read that people with the same PCI card succeed to use it with 400MB/s..

Re: SSD too slow ?

Is it a PCI card or a PCI-E? Throughput speeds are way slower on PCI.

Re: SSD too slow ?

On my ivy bridge i3 i get the following speeds:

Samsung 128GB 830:

jordy@ivy ~ > sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 1464 MB in 3.00 seconds = 487.75 MB/sec

Intel 80GB postville:

jordy@ivy ~ > sudo hdparm -t /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 798 MB in 3.00 seconds = 265.94 MB/sec

How do you have partitioned your SSD? Is the alignment correct? Could you please show us your /etc/fstab?

And have you already read this page on the wiki? https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SS … erformance

Re: SSD too slow ?

It's a PCI-E card. This one :
04:00.0 SATA controller: ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1062 Serial ATA Controller (rev 01)

Re: SSD too slow ?

I'll give this a guess, it's a PCI-E x1 card right? And your board only supports 1st gen PCI-E? So you'd be limited to ~250MB/s theoretical.

Plug it in your motherboard and check the speeds again, even @ sataII you should be doing better than that.

See my drives, you'll see SATAn is not the only limiting factor! Unless mentioned the drives are all in sata2, no sata3 yet here, but only one drive could gain from it.
Intel X25-M G2 (postville) 80GB : 252.86 MB/sec #Spec is 250MB/s
Intel 520 240GB : 259.74 MB/sec #Spec is 550MB/s - guessing SATAII is holding me back here
Intel X25-M G2 (postville) 80GB : 125.58 MB/sec #Spec is 250MB/s (on sata I netbook, being held back here too)
Intel 320 40GB : 180 MB/sec #Spec 200MB/s
Sandisk msata P4 64GB : 116.78 MB/sec #Spec 130MB/s

Re: SSD too slow ?

My motherboard is a P7P55D, that supports PCI Express 1x 2.0. The Asmedia ASM1062 is a PCI Express 2.0 too, there may have a trouble.. Some persons said they have a 500mb/s speed..
I will try to update the firmware of the card as said on some forums.. It could be a bug !
