Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Good work! If I run "catalyst_build_module ra" and reboot, my system just reboots and runs fine again. Is that what I should be expecting? Does that mean it works?
Also, i had to change

Before=umount.tartget

to

Before=umount.target

in catalyst-hook.service.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Yes, it means it works smile
Sorry for the typo, though! Looks like umount.target isn't actually needed :>, but i will correct it and leave - should be safer

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Thanks for your work! Also, I *think* I've got some warnings while booting since upgrading catalyst-test. Some lines of USB devices not accepting addresses/unable to enumerate ... I'm not entirely sure if this is happening since this last upgrade, if it's been there before or only since I unplugged my printer. Any idea?

Edit: Nevermind, got rid of the warnings!

Vi0l0, another concern about the mkinitcpio hook: suppose pacman updates linux before linux-headers. Then fglrx will be rebuilt by the hook using old headers.

It won't be rebuild because /usr/lib/modules/<kernel_version_of_updated kernel>/build won't show up until linux-headers will also be updated.

Will it build the right version when the kernel and headers update at the same time? By the past I had problems because the old hook tried to build the the version currently running of the kernel, not the new.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

It should work fine, as said it's rebuilding modules when system is shutting down, so it's not depending on pacman's work.
Your problems were strange, though - i can only imagine such behavior if you were manually running simple `catalyst_build_module` after kernel update - because then it would try to build module for a booted kernel.

`catalyst_build_module all` should then be a solution for you, and now the new `catalyst_build_module check` function works even better.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

If i try use aticonfig i get error :

aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

Generally that isn't problem for me, but how can i check temperature and other stuff described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … _utilities ?

$ lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series]

EDIT:
I discover some warnings in my xorg.0.log:

Violo, I know, that some of us don't read the pacman output enough (not me!), but is it really necessary, to put this woman in it, to get the attention?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Her name is Angela, isn't she fabulous? tongue
You did hit the jackpot, though! It's all to get the attention. I will remove her from the AUR today or tomorrow, and from the repos with the next update, which should be soon.

@xorgx3:
btw which catalyst are you using?

`catalyst_build_module all` should then be a solution for you, and now the new `catalyst_build_module check` function works even better.

I will try that, thank you for all dude! :-)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Since recent update/upgrade catalyst-hd234k: with linux 3.8.6-1 does not work properly. If I install my latest linux package which is 3.8.4-1 it works.
Did I miss something? (I have followed the wiki, with the repositories and all)

Thanks in advance.

No problem here with catalyst-hd234k and linux-ck 3.8.6-3. If you use plain catalyst package, remember to rebuild the kernel module; if you use catalyst-hook, remember to enable systemd service for automatic recompilation on system shutdown. In any case, always read pacman output when updating.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Weird, obviously I missed something. I never used catalyst-hook, only catalyst-utils, with no hooks or modules in mkinitcpio and never had problems....
Tried catalyst-hooks now, works, all good, thanks!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Well I was doubting the necessity of xorg repo, and never added the catalyst repo, but now I have some strange pulseaudio problem, which I can only blame on ATI driver.
So I finally decided to look into it added the repo, updated and now hopefully things will work.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello,
I had an ATI Radeon 4680 (used violos legacy repo) till it broke today. I borrowed an ATI Radeon 6450 from a friend and therefore installed the catalyst driver from violos catalyst repo, changed the xorg112 repo to xorg113 and made a pacman -Syu (last time was about 2-3 weeks ago, cause of a vacation).

After that I had a lot of trouble. Most of them I could resolve after searching the forum/wiki/google. But now I have no idea what to do:
My system starts and everything is fine (no errors/warnings) till
[OK] Reached target Graphical Interface.

After that I can wait a very long time and nothing happens, no gdm starting or what so ever. I can switch to another tty and login there.
systemctl status gdm.service says:

gdm.service - GNOME Display Manager
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/gdm.service; enabled)
Active: active (running) since Wed 2013-04-10 21:55:37 CEST; 30s ago
Main PID: 1128 (gdm-binary)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/gdm.service
          |- 1128 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary

I tried to stop and restart gdm and startx (which says Fatal server error: no screens found). The graphic card is working fine in wind7, so no hardware error.

Edit: I tried the radeon driver too, with the same result.

Anyone a solution?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Did you re-run aticonfig --initial?

Yes I did.
I deleted the xorg.conf file before installing the radeon driver. At least that should have worked, shouldn't it?

But finally I got it working again smile
The catalyst-generator package did the job (I have tried catalyst-dkms and catalyst before).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I've already build packages for archive repos, but have found a "bug" in catalyst-hook.
It's touching multi-kernels systems: when updating catalyst-hook package it's now updating only the fglrx module for the running kernel while it has to build modules for all installed kernels, otherwise `catalyst_build_module check` will left those modules in older versions (because it's only checking the md5 sum of the Module.symvers file).
The fix is very easy: add `catalyst_build_module ra && catalyst_build_module all` into catalyst-hook.install file.
I will update all repos and the AUR with this fix tomorrow (probably).

BTW: thanks for all kind words and the support! big_smile

You didn't, it's just that fglrx module inside catalyst package was not compatible with the 3.8.6 kernel, I've already updated it.

It seems that most of the recent problems with catalyst reported in this thread boil down to old fglrx kernel modules, and that a simple module rebuild fixes everything most of the times. Vi0l0, should you put back Angela on post install message to make everyone aware of this thing?? wink

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

My problem, explained in 2 posts above (5071&5110), doesn't seem to be sensitive to something, not even to rebuilding module on any kernel I tried. I start thinking there is a harware limitation but I don't understand the difference between catalyst 11.11 (the last who works) and catalyst 11.12 and later, including catalyst-legacy from Vi0l0's repo (wich doesn't). Can someone give me an idea? Sorry for bothering you.
