Keymapping out-of-range codes....

I am trying to map a few keycodes on my Mele F10 wireless keyboard remote to escape and return....

The keycodes (according to showkey) are listed below, however, they do not have scan codes associated to them (or at least they don't show up on showkey).

keycode 273 press
keycode 273 release
keycode 272 press
keycode 272 release

I attempted to copy/edit '/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/us.map.gz' and add the keycodes...

keycode 272 = Return
keycode 273 = Escape

but it renders an error when trying to load them....

loadkeys: ./personal.map.gz:51: killkey called with bad index 272

So, my question is, how can I map these keycodes?
