Intellij behaves erratically

Being a longtime Ubuntu user, I forgot that the AUR existed ( ) yesterday and downloaded the IDEA tgz off the Intellij website. It was unusably slow, even after a restart.
Today, I deleted the archive and reinstalled IDEA through Yaourt. It works like a charm.

Could anyone explain why?

(Although Pacman/Arch wins anyway, so it's reconfirmed that Arch is a win anyway )
