Software RAID on srcs28x in arch linux

Hello. I'm newbie in working with controllers.
I have a server with a RAID controller srcs28x. I need to configure the software RAID (not hardware). Is it possible to do it in hardware controller, or is it absurd?
When loading click ctrl G. Delete all logical drives. The remaining 12 physical drives on two controllers. Boot from Arch Linix ISO and do not see any devices in the directory / dev. Lspci command gives both controllers. dmesg similarly.
lsmod vydael that driver loaded megaraid. Tried to load the driver megaraid_sas but it came to nothing lead.
Tell me how do I see the physical disks and then install? Any ideas and links welcome.

Re: Software RAID on srcs28x in arch linux

You probably have to configure the hw raid controller bios to have it function as a plain sata/sas controller instead of a raid controller.
This is possible for many hw raid controllers and should be covered in the manual for the controller.

You are aware that SW raid is almost always slower then hw raid ?

Thanks for the reply! I will try this option.
Yes I am aware that software is slower, but I doubt about the reliability. Is it possible that the software RAID reliable than hardware?

Re: Software RAID on srcs28x in arch linux

The intel srscs28x appears to be one of their raid controllers used on server motherboards, and those tend to be very reliable.

personally i can think of 2 reasons to use software raid over hardware raid :

- flexibility
I might prefer a raid setup that is not supported by the controller bios but is possible with SW raid.

- portability
when a hw raid controller fails, you will need to replace it or loose access to all your data.
Often only the exact same model/revision will work, a newer revision may not be able to access the raid array.
In a business environment you'd have a 5 or 7 year support contract for a server, so your supplier should be able to help you then.
Also businesses tend to make frequent backups of all data.

When using sw raid, all you would need is another sas/sata controller, brand/model/revision type doesn't matter then.

Reply with quote Intel Community:

"The Intel® RAID Controller SRCS28X is not a "software" RAID controller. It is a hardware RAID controller based on the Intel® IOP331 I/O processor with support for RAID levels from 0, 1, 5, 10, and 50.

Does Arch Linix support and have a driver for the SRCS28X? Intel really only supports Redhat* and SUSE*. There are OpenServer* and Unixware 7.x* drivers available.

The SRCS28X has reached End of Interactive Support status with Intel."

I think this topic can be closed.

Thanks. Regards.

Re: Software RAID on srcs28x in arch linux

The driver for the srcs28x is megaraid, and that's part of the kernel.
i doubt very much you'll have driver problems with arch and this card.

It's End of Interactive Support status very likely means getting a replacment incase of failure will be tough.
So using it as a plain sata/sas controller with software raid is now much more attractive then hw raid.
