Forums are going down hill....

Hello and Good Morning,
I think these forums are really becoming bad there is a lot of bullshit tha goes on such as this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight= and thread highjackings, etc...
IRC has already hit the shit hole and it looks like the forums are going to to. I've talked to a lot of people who tried arch and like it but don't use it cause the community sucks and to me it does seem like they are not very accepting to noobs.  Anyways I wanted to make a purposal that we keep the really funky stuff of the forums and maybe anothe rmember can maek some forums just to bs on.

Re: Forums are going down hill....

With all respect, picking on off-topic for containing silly posts is a little harsh. The my avatar is better than cactus' makes quite a lot of sense for anyone in the forum community. Phrak and Catcus are two of the most highly respected - and most importantly, the most helpful - in the forums. To lose them would be grounds for a call of the forums going down hill.

That thread is clearly based on the running joke that Cactus and Phrak enjoy an avatar change every now and again. The only problem was that it should have been "Catcus's" and not "Cactus'". tongue

I don't think the forums are anti-noob - just anti-silly-questions. Hell, I'm not a newbie and I've been taken to task for not reading the wiki before posting. (Cheers, Dibble).

I think many people here are quite protective over the forums and wouldn't like to see it getting full of "bullshit". I think the forums have remained pretty decent, I have to say. But then again, maybe I'm one of the offenders in the so-called "bullshit" overload of late. My only issue regards the censorship of political posts, but even that's stopped becoming so much of an issue now.

You joined late March, how did you find the forums initially? It would be good to see where we are failing. I think old-timers would be surprised if new users were being overlooked.

Re: Forums are going down hill....

Been around since 2003 and consider this forum doing currently fine. OT was before a place getting "overloaded" with all type of thoughts, emotions and posts from a to z, and is now a nice place to have a "break" from the formal forum talks. smile

Had a thought why its currently fine. It seems many of the users have found their place in the AL community. There is Wiki for those liking in documentation, AUR for package makers, Arch Blog for user developers, and the usual help giving to new forum users. Those who are busy usually don't complain or make lot of noice. wink

Please note that the referenced post is in off topic and that off topic get's pruned every so often.

IRC has always "hit the shit hole", it is not made for proper formal communication - if it was why are the so many sex-chat channels?

For the record, I am unaware of anyone who is unaccepting just because someone's skill level is lacking - the irritation comes from people who do not know how to help themselves.  Instead of saying "zomg teh thing is not wroking?!?", it helps to provide additional information, such as what has been tried and where they have looked for the information.

If you are aware of any specific instance where someone was ridiculed for being a "noob", please let me know.

That is the point of the Off-Topic forum, no?  I mean, even the official Chicago White Sox forums have an off topic board.

Off topic is a way for community members to relate to each other and discuss things in any way they like.  It became a problem when it was filled with obvious flame bait (religious, political, etc), but that's not the case any more.

dibble has installed the mod Dusty has mentioned, making Off Topic an "opt-out" forum, so feel free to ignore that forum rather than spoil the fun for others.

If you like, we can remove all sense of personality from posters and we can all sit around, typing like robots with sticks up our collective asses.  I'm sure there's a phpBB mod for that somewhere...

Re: Forums are going down hill....

Hmm... I would consider myself an Arch-noob, as this is the first "manual" Linux OS I've ever tried.  Everyone I've come in contact with seems very supportive and helpful.  In no way did I feel turned away.

But, again, I've done as much reading as I could and only turned to posting questions on the forums when I was really confused and wanted clarification.  In other words, hopefully avoiding the "stupid question" dilemma.

Re: Forums are going down hill....

I agree with everything you say phrakture, but I  just had to smartass on this one:

phrakture wrote:

a) how do you know how many sex-chat channels there are?
b) how do you know sex-chat channels are informal?
c) does this argument also say "there's lots of porn web sites, so the www is not useful"?

haha.

The real problem with IRC is it attracts losers. :-D  So do off-topic forums...

Every so often somebody needs to bring up that the forums are going for shit. It would not be good forums without this. It usually starts a huge flame-row and everybody feels better for a few months, then it happens again.....

Problem is new people keep bringing it up thinking their ideas are new.

This should be "there's lots of porn web sites, so the www is useful.

Hell yeah!

Re: Forums are going down hill....

Because phrakture has said more than enough with regard to msg's original post, which I thought was a bit troll like in the first place, I'll ask people to let this one die.

If people do find off-topic annoying then they CAN ignore it, and any other forum, by clicking the profile and using the ignore forum mod.  I myself ignore Off-Topic already.

I would also like to point out, just to get a look in in the smart arse stakes, that Dusty is a MASSIVE hypocrite because he posts in Off-Topic all the time.  However, I can almost guarantee that Dusty would say that his whole reason for not wanting Off-Topic is so people like him can't post in it.  That's the smart bit.

It was definately trollish in nature, if it doesn't die tb me.

That's not strictly true. Define all the time. I may be wrong but this is the way it seems to me: I have bursts of major posts taking over OT and then I don't read there at all for a while. I don't recall having posted in off topic in the last couple weeks, for example. But my sense of time is totally skewed. I do recall having a burst in which I took over the forum, pissed everyone off, and left, but since I have OT blocked, I have to make a conscious effort to post there. Unless somebody links into it, I really don't have the time you guys have for goofing off.

Well I didn't. Classes end on Tuesday. Mwahahahahah! Ready or not, OT, here I come.

Hey, I just figured out what was wrong with the forums. I just got a PM trying to tempt me to Ubuntu... signature:

The problem with the Arch forums is lack of that signature.
