I am trying to use a HP t5530 thin client to check on the status of our coffee machine using a temperature sensor (yeah, I know, it's flaky, but it works). The t5530 does not have a lot of storage or RAM, so I installed Arch to a 3GB btrfs GPT-partition on a 4GB thumbdrive, leaving 800MB for swap (which is not being used atm.).
I am using a 8188CUS wifi-n dongle (one of those microscopically sized ones), using the proprietary 8192cu driver from aur (package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/dkms-8192cu/ latest version 3.4.4_4749-6).
CPU usage is alright, and the terminal works fine when I access it physically. However, the internet connection is very slow (say 1-10 KB/s) even though the AP is very close and iwconfig is showing a good signal (I think...), and the connection is usually dropped after a couple of minutes/hours, depending on whether the stars have aligned.

What could be causing the terribly slow wifi connection?
