Re: FVWM

Archwd will be much more dynamic compared to fvwm-crystal.

Giving you all a little preview of some modules which will be in upcoming archwd release:

Any comments on the interface?

Re: FVWM

Damn... this FVWM stuff is every bit as addictive as distro-hopping can be!   big_smile

I started playing with it right after I got off work this past Wednesday, and have been playing with it ever since, except for a few short periods of sleep and eats.  My first configuration was put together from the built-in (win95) thing and it worked pretty well, but I wanted something better looking and more refined so I went on a hunt for fvwm configs and came up with about 10 nice ones, some containing the entire theme package.  The best of the bunch was this one, as posted by Stonecrest in the screenshots forum.  It works really well, was easy to install, and was fun to use:

t_fvwm_blue.jpg

I also tried the fvwm-crystal theme in the Arch repos, and it worked well, but it just didn't feel right for some reason.  Since that time, I've been working on my own configuration and it's coming along very nicely.  It's cobbled together from about a dozen different configs/themes I've come across.  I simply pulled out the parts that I liked from each one, then edited it all as needed to suit my own tastes.

It's amazing how much I've learned in the last few days about the way window managers work.  I've tried using FVWM several times before, but the configuration concept always seemed totally overwhelming, so I gave it up each time about half way through.  This time, I stuck it out and am very happy that I did.

FVWM is extremely powerful and capable of doing just about anything if one will take the time to figure it out.  Reading over the man pages is essential, and of course there's help here, and at the Fvwm Forums.  You'd be amazed at how much you can learn just by looking at the code and then experimenting with it as you build your own configuration.

Hehe... my machine and/or Fvwm has probably been restarted at least a thousand times since Wednesday as I'm experimenting, and learning.  I'll be posting a screenshot after my new config has been refined a bit, and it gets that "just right" wallpaper.

Re: FVWM

Here's a good one that's very easy to install and use:

The download link for it is in the first post.

I just scrapped Windows again, due to not needing it for school/work anymore, and now that I'm back using Arch, I was thinking of trying out something new for a WM. Did pacman -S fvwm, and found someones ready-made config with images and all (So I'd hve somewhere to start), but I can't get even that to work. No matter what I do, no matter whos config I use I just get ugly grey boxes here and there and little to no functionality... Any idea what might be the problem?

Uhmmm, you've installed the 'good-old' stable version. You should install the devel version, which is actually the current version.

pacman -S fvwm-devel

That one will give you more functionality

Re: FVWM

Is this an fvwm thread or an archwd thread?  On balance I think the latter is discussed more so i think the thread title should be changed.

Originally, it was supposed to be a FVWM thread to discuss about configs, tricks, etc.  I would keep the title as is. After all, ArchWD is related to FVWM.  I *think* that the developpement of ArchWD is almost done so probably the focus will return to fvwm. :?

As me is both the initiater of this thread and developing archwd (together with Rasat), I think title should be as is. Archwd is basically a tool to get along with fvwm (installing pre-made modules (and more). Writing modules for archwd is basically the same as writing parts of fvwm config.

Talking about archwd, development is indeed almost done. I'll finish up the new installer front end on monday, so next week will be used for finetuning between front-end and back-end.
Expect something really soon now.
As when version 2.0 will be released, it will be time for extending the number of modules, so please don't hesitate to contribute at that time.

Re: FVWM

Few months ago I thought the same about FVWM, the most complex and ugliest WM. But its not true. FVWM-crystal and many of the existing configs give a wrong idea as complex, bulky and difficult WM.

The beauty and simplicity is shown in the beginners guide. This is the only document needed to get started. FVWM is like finding Arch Linux after years of trying different distros. smile

Yes, rasat... I totally agree.  The more you look at the code the easier it gets and it all really starts to make sense.  Hmm... guess I need to check out the ArchWD thingy now that I've taken a liking to Fvwm.

Re: FVWM

I thought this would be of interest to any folks that do a lot of keyboard navigation..

With the help of Thomas Adam, I implemented a way to have keybindings that deiconify apps in your IconBox. For example, ctrl-alt-2 would deiconify the 2nd app, ctrl-alt-3 the third, and so on. I find it so damn useful and convenient.
