[SOLVED]Pidgin refuses to start after last update (GNOME 3.8's fault?)

Hello,

I updated the system on 13-04-22 and restarted yesterday. Pidgin refused to start after Firefox. I rebooted and tried to start pidgin first. On the second time or so it worked. But after I suspended the system, it showed the same symptoms (all pidgin's windows are blank, no icon in the tray). If I start it from the terminal, nothing is printed there and I can't kill it with Ctrl+C, only with killall -9 pidgin from a different terminal.

Pidgin itself didn't get updated, but GNOME did to 3.8. Downgrading pidgin, as well as gtk3 didn't help. Now I'm stuck.

If you want, I'll list pacman.log's summary of what was updated. The update before that one was on 13-04-05

BTW, I use Fluxbox, so I don't know if there's anything wrong with GNOME. gnome-control-panel starts fine, that's all I know wink

LOL. I went to IRC, asked the same question and someone asked me for strace output. I installed strace, run strace pidgin in the terminal and pidgin started normally. Before that I tried to start it like 20 times, downgrading and upgrading stuff inbetween, all without success. Let's see if it dies again after I suspend my system in the night.

I experienced this too, right after updating to gnome 3.8. There is another thread with this same problem here. As a solution, I made a  modified PKGBUILD of pidgin to include the patch mentioned in that thread, anyone can download my tarball here, extract and run makepkg on it,  so far I haven't experienced that hang since.

Its a glib bug, the glib version that is currently in [testing] should fix this pidgin hang (and some similar issues with other programs, such as GIMP)

Thanks for the pkgbuild. So far so good!

No problem, but as bwat47 posted above the patch may not be needed with the latest glib2 update (2.36.1-3).

After installing the latest glib2, I re-installed pidgin officially supplied in the main repositories, so far so good, although the patch may still be needed for some systems, but as I understand the patch will be added to pidgin in the future anyway.

Yes, all seems well now with the glib2 update. Even Empathy works and I can now add accounts!
