[SOLVED] Arch Xen 4.2 - Windows - 3D Blu-Ray

Hi guys, I am building an HTPC. I have already installed Arch, Xen 4.2 and Windows 8.

Everything works. I have successfully passed my AMD 7700 through Windows. I use secondary passthru.

I have no problems playing regular 2D Blu-Rays in XBMC (even with 7.1 DTS-HD MA / Dolby TrueHD Sound.

Unfortunately the same can't be said about 3D. I know I need external software that is capable of Stereo-3D.

First I tried latest Cyberlink PowerDVD 13. That wouldn't even play regular 2D Blu-Rays (though .m2ts files did work)

Then I tried Corel WinDVD Pro and I it plays 2D Blu-Rays without any hickups but whenever I try to switch to 3D it just won't work.

I use AMDs latest drivers (even tried latest beta)

Is there anyone of you who has tried the same and succeded or can anybody give me a reason why it wouldn't work?

thanks a lot!

This seems like a windows issue not an arch...However

Have you tried the Arcsoft player that AMD recommend?

Do a clean install of windows without xen and see if it works with 3d. If it doesn't then try with windows 7. I have had issues using windows 8 in xen before...

Ouch...virtualisation...passthrough and things with hardware access to decrypt files...good luck !
But I guess crondog is right ! I would also try playing 3D BDs on bare metal with Windows 8. I am not aware of any Linux player which is able to play back 3D stuff but MakeMKV under arch with it's streaming server might be another approach. I rather tend to dump the BD straight to MKV without recompression since it's less cumbersome to play it back on various systems.

Edit:
There is quite a lengthy posting over at the german debian forum on this topic:
http://debianforum.de/forum/viewtopic.p … 03#p899781

Of course it is in german but may be google translate helps here...

They mention bino as 3D player:

My archlinux x86_64 host:
AMD E350 (2x1.6GHz) / 8GB DDR3 RAM / GeForce 9500GT (passive) / Arch running from 16GB USB Stick

Re: [SOLVED] Arch Xen 4.2 - Windows - 3D Blu-Ray

well, I'll be damned!

Thanks a lot for your input. I tried it on a clean regular Windows installation a couple months ago. It worked without any problems. I used Cyberlink PowerDVD. It was only then, that I tried to make it work under Xen. That's why I thought it had to be a Xen/Arch problem since both Cyberlink and Corel didn't work.

BUT:

I installed Arcsoft TMT 6 and it worked! Now I can watch 3D Blu-Rays too. Very cool! Unbelievable, I never thought a third player would actually do the trick but it did.

I guess Arcsoft is the way to go for all people using a dedicated AMD GPU.

You're awesome guys !
