Xserver crash

Hi!
I've experienced a non-trivial crash today. I use xfce4 with compiz. After I clicked on a (either minimized or in the background) window in xfce4-panel the xserver crashed and I was directed to the login manager (SLiM). I logged in again and xserver crashed immidietly. I suppose it might be related to compiz since some effects used to crash my PC in the exact same way (afte being enabled in ccsm).

here's the journal:

Re: Xserver crash

I am also experiencing this.
But I use standalone fusion-icon and no login manager. Systemd logs me in automatically.

It must be related with the upgrade I did yesterday. I'll try to nail down the bad package. Have you made any progress on this?

Re: Xserver crash

Not so far. I currently try to install the latest compiz-devel packages from AUR (although v0.9.9.0 is declared stable actually, the repo doesn't get updated hmm)
So you use Compiz as a standalone?

Also this happened only once. It does happen alwways however when I enable some compiz features like "Bicubic filter" or "Water effect" etc... In such cases I need to start a session without compiz running and diable the features or I won't be able to login (throws me right out of the session).

I hope you manage to make out the package that screwed it up wink

Re: Xserver crash

Hi,

I'm also experiencing complete X crashes since I updated yesterday (almost every 30 minutes or so).
But I don't use compiz or fusion-icon.
There are some bug reports that point into a similar direction:
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9709
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1133439
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1262358

I always see this log entry, sometimes, X crashes as well.

xfce4-session[451]: segfault at ffffffff00000000 ip 00007f9802f24537 sp 00007fffb8eeba50 error 5 in libglib-2.0.so.0.3600.1[7f9802ec1000+fc000]

Since xfce4-session has not been updated for some time, I guess the bug is related to lib32-glib2.

Re: Xserver crash

Thanks a lot for the update rmetzger. Good to know it's a more generic problem with glib2.

To downgrade it, I have actually downgraded half of the apps I got installed.

My xfce4-session crashes constantly since yesterday. Did your downgrade of glib2 solve the problem?

Re: Xserver crash

My xfce4 started to crash also since yesterday, usually when creating a new terminal or browser window, or when trying to bring out the logout dialog. The journal indicates a segmentation fault. I downgraded glib2 to 2.34.3-1 and this solved the problem. However, I also had to downgrade gvfs for it to work, and evince still locks up with some glib errors, even after downgrading. There seems to be a more general problem with glib2, as it also affects skype (see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=154571 ).

Re: Xserver crash

You don't know where I might find an older glib2 package? I (stupidly) deleted it from my cashe.

Re: Xserver crash

afulm, try

http://arm.konnichi.com

glib2 is in the core folder, download the one corresponding to your architecture.

EDIT: You might also want to look into https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Downgrade. Before I stray too much off topic, I want to warn you that downgrading glib2 might bring new issues that must be solved by downgrading other packages, in my case the gnome components I have on my system.

Thank you. Downgrading glib2 and gvfs seem to have workws fine so far, at least for me.

Re: Xserver crash

Thanks for the very helpful info.  Downgrading to glib2 2.34.3-1 and gvfs 1.14.2-4 bought me some stability and ended to xserver crashes.  I, too, am running a Compiz / Xfce4 desktop.  Several "g-apps" are still failing to launch, including gedit, gthumb, etc, but I have alternates that work fine and don't have the same dependencies (vim for editing, xnview for graphics).  I tried downgrading apps, but this didn't seem to work very well.  Don't know if this helps, but here are the error spews from a couple of apps that are still failing launch...

gedit 3.8.1-1 throws:

(process:1240): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2720: You forgot to call g_type_init()
(process:1240): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2720: You forgot to call g_type_init()
(process:1240): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_interface_add_prerequisite: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_INTERFACE (interface_type)' failed
(process:1240): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `result != 0' failed
(process:1240): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_add_interface_static: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_INSTANTIATABLE (instance_type)' failed
(process:1240): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2720: You forgot to call g_type_init()

gthumb 3.2.1-1 throws:

(gthumb:1277): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

Re: Xserver crash

I brought again my system to the most current versions of the packages and, voilà, no more crashes. The only difference is that the kernel was meanwhile updated from 3.8.8-1 to 3.8.8-2. Could this have caused the instability after all?

My intention was actually to go on and install glib2 2.36.1-3 from [testing], but now there is no need to.

Update: Sorry, I spoke too early. I managed to get xfce dump the core by starting virtualbox. I am currently on glib2 from [testing], but the crashes persist. So, rolling back sad

Re: Xserver crash

Weird thing is, I've got two Arch systems (work / home), both running Compiz over XFCE4, similar app sets, same upgrade schedule (both took the recent large list of patches), and the older, slower work system has no crashing or app problems whatsoever.  I confirmed it's running the newer glib2 and has been cycled after the last update.  The systems have different procs / display adapters, which initially made me suspect a video problem, but who knows?  It's just ironic that the office system, which I set up as a test bed for tweaks in order to insulate my precious home box from trouble is the one that survived the update storm and came out smiling!  grrrr!

Re: Xserver crash

It seems to have been fixed. I updated first just glib2 to 2.36.1-3 (no longer in testing) and it did no longer crash. Finally I did a full upgrade (including xfce4-session which is meant specifically to fix problems with glib2) and no problems so far.

Thanks to the upstream developers and packagers.

Re: Xserver crash

Dunno if this helps, but I'm trying to find differences between my two similar compiz / xfce systems--the one that has the problem and the one that doesn't.  Here's one potentially relevant difference:

broken box video driver installed from: nvidia-313.30-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
OK box video driver installed from: nvidia-313.30-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

The same!?

Anyways I'm using Radeon drivers. The bug is quite difficult to reproduce because it happens quite randomly (and still, despite updates).

what are you doing to solve it? are you just downgrading all apps into 2 weeks ago? I'm sorry, I just dont get it smile

Re: Xserver crash

I had to do two things to solve this.  A system upgrade which includes the latest xfce4-session, and an upgrade to fusion-icon linked to by plp in the following bug report.

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/34892

# pacman -Ss xfce4-session
extra/xfce4-session 4.10.1-1 (xfce4) [installed]

I use SLiM as a login manager, and I am using method 1 in the archwiki for starting compiz.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Compiz#Method_1:

Initially I had some problems with saved sessions gumming up the works.  IIRC, I switched to xfwm4 after first logging in, then opened Settings > Session and Startup > Session > Clear saved sessions.  I then rebooted and applied the changes in Method 1 above, and rebooted again.  I have no problems now.  Everything works as it should.

Re: Xserver crash

Great, I already upgrade it last night and when I use xfce again, compiz works flawlessly. The only thing that I still don't understand is fusion-icon. I got a "segmentation fault" when running compiz using fusion-icon, well maybe I have to use it manually without fusion-icon for a while.
