Remote media server?

I was wondering if anybody had an externally hosted media server.  I have fairly nice server hosted in a datacenter that I use for playing around.  I used to use it as a development server, but now I mainly do that on ones provided by my work.

Does anyone use an external server as a media server to serve movies or music?  I was wondering how you might set it up?
I would assume that I could use something like mpd on my remote server, and use an mpd client at work and home to listen to the music?

Suggestions for software or configurations would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Remote media server?

I have an old desktop running XBMC connected to my 50" plasma tv.  I also installed Plex on it (http://www.plexapp.com/) and plex will will allow you to stream the media to any device, even over the web.  Works nicely.  I use plex to stream media to my Roku in the bedroom.
