Static Network Configuration Issue

I'm following the Wik:

The Beginners' Guide wrote:

Copy a sample profile from /etc/netctl/examples to /etc/netctl/:

# cd /etc/netctl
# cp examples/ethernet-dhcp .

And what I have in front of me doesn't match the guide...

[root@archiso / ]# ls -l /etc/n
nanorc netconfig nscd.conf nsswitch.conf

What do I do? I don't understand why I don't have that file it suggests I copy for a static IP configuration.

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

No as this isn't specified in the Wiki. I assume the Wiki understands I just popped in a bootable Arch ISO and am working with defaults. Unless it's mentioned to install a specific package in the Beginners' Guide (which it's not), how would I know.

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

Someone's been a bit hasty with beginners guide updates - netctl will be part of the base install soon, but it's not yet.

I suggest you use the official Installation Guide for now, it doesn't get messed around like that.

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

Wouldn't it be easier to just make a small modification entry to the Wiki to advise users when / how they need to install netctl - since most people trying Arch or are fairly new to it are strongly urged to use 'The Beginners' Guide'? Seems silly to have a Wiki and not have it actually work as it's intended purpose.

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

Sure, go ahead. Like I said, it's not official documentation, so do whatever you want with it.

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

The 'Beginners' Guide' in the Arch Wiki isn't considered "official documentation"?

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

To clarify: The Beginners' Guide is open to editing by all, whereas the Installation Guide is a protected page and can be relied on in terms of accuracy.

How I am supposed to install netctl if I am not able to setup a  network connection in the first place??

I am using the current archiso "Current Release: 2013.05.01" and neither wifi-menu nor netctl are in it:(

@zwa

How are you supposed to install Arch if you are not able to setup a network connection in the first place??

But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

Good points. As tomk pointed out, netctl is not yet in the archiso, so netcfg should probably still be there.

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

Glinx, use the current iso with the current Installation Guide. As already mentioned, the Beginners Guide is not accurate at the moment.

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

Just to confirm 2013.04.01 working, 2013.05.01 not working.

@tomk
Hi tomk. I think something is missing off the new iso. Couldn't get any network up.
Just come back to Arch after 6 months away, I waited for the May iso as well. Straight into the thick of it!

Re: Static Network Configuration Issue

Here is the bug report for this issue:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/35079?project=6
Also i sent an email to the archiso developer.
The bug report says the issue should be fixed soon when netctl is back in base group.
