the system can detect if the cd case was opened or closed so why isn't there something like an automatic script that mounts cds for you when you inserted/removed a cd?

What do you mean? There is a lot of tools doing what you are asking for, you just have to enable them! Personally I use gnome-volume-manager. Or are you thinking of something different?

I'm not a KDE user, but i belive pmount is a DE independent tool, or you could wait for KDE-3.5 which have suport for automounting built inn!

the kde-thing doesn't seem to work - do i have to launch hal-daemon (hald) to get it working?
Offline
Did you check the wiki already: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE
hence, you need to add 'dbus' and 'hal' in your daemons array in rc.conf (dbus should become before hal)

ok the auto-mount feature of kde 3.5 works well but when i press the eject button on my cdrom-drive it does not unmount automatically...

There is a nice and tiny tool called auto-eject-cdrom that I'm using. I doesn't depend on anything.
