Issue with LVM and 2 volume groups.

I have 2 physical disks with one volume group on each of them. First contains root and /home. Second one contains /var and swap. After update I got "Timeout error" for /var and swap. I can boot in emergency systemd mode and can clearly see /var and swap partitions. I have lvm2 hook after udev and before fiesystems. I done latest changes to LVM long before and everything worked fine.

Any advice? Thank you.

Re: Issue with LVM and 2 volume groups.

I have a multi-disk, multi VG setup as well. I've had timeouts three or four times over several years, but simply rebooting 'fixed' everything. That said, you may need to provide more detail if you want any meaningful help. Ie. if the journal is active, does it contain anything interesting? Have you looked into enabling extra debug logging for related services?

Also, what do you mean by "can clearly see /var and swap partitions"? Do you mean you can see the LVs?

But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

Re: Issue with LVM and 2 volume groups.

Yep, I can see them and mount them (logical volumes). I booted with debug log level for systemd and log target to kmsg. But I can't find anything interesting in logs.

here is dmesg output:

Re: Issue with LVM and 2 volume groups.

Did you just update to kernel 3.8? My server is stuck on 3.7.10 because when tries to boot 3.8.x, it drops into a rescue shell saying it can't find the root partition (that volume group isn't available). After 3-4 minutes, I can then see the volume group with the root partition using

lvm vgdisplay

and then exit out of the rescue shell and the boot will continue normally.

Before that, however, that same command doesn't show the volume group or the physical volumes either! My laptop seems to work fine though...it also boots from an LVM root partition.

Re: Issue with LVM and 2 volume groups.

My guess is udev issues. Looking at the kernel log, the first thing that seems odd is

[ 2.888070] systemd[1]: Got direct mount request on /var, triggered by 222 (systemd-udevd)

and then the first clear indication of a problem is

[ 92.425512] systemd[1]: Job dev-mapper-MainVolGroup\x2dvar.device/start timed out.

Maybe try enabling extra udev logging/verbosity.

OTOH, I'm just throwing things out here, so maybe you should get a second opinion. wink

Edit: I enabled debug logging to kmsg, rebooted, and uploaded contents of dmesg here. Maybe a comparison will help figure out what's wrong.

But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

No, I got updated just from 3.8.6 to 3.8.10. Also I can't login to rescue shell directly when boot failed. I see message about rescue mode but I  can't see password prompt.

Thank you guys for you tips, I will be looking at my issue more soon!
