Killing X session sends me to a black screen.

I just got around to installing the correct nvidia drivers for my laptop, and it's pretty sweet. It was like I was looking through fogged glass before. Anyways, when I kill of my X session, it used to drop me back to a standard command line, but now it's like the nvidia driver doesn't stop, or isn't properly displaying the terminal or something. Having killed the X session I know that the terminal is back there, because I can run commands, for example to restart X, but I'd like to see it. Any ideas of what I should change?

Strange. I had this some time ago: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161039
But it should be fixed by now...

Hmm. Actually .88 is the driver version that I just upgraded to. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that the monitor isn't turning off per se, it's just not displaying anything but black. It's certainly not a huge problem, since once I start an x server I'm usually staying in it other than to restart it, but these little unresolved issues make me twitch.

If you upgraded from the graphical environment and you didn't reboot after that, it's still the 304.84 module in ram that is used; it is not automatically replaced with the new one by the package upgrade.
You can see which module is used in the kernel log journal:

NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module  304.88

The last one in the log should tell 304.88.

Cheers.

Re: Killing X session sends me to a black screen.

No, I'm definetly running 304.88. Previously I was using the "nvidia" package, and it was throwing an error and not loading because it's not the correct one for my card. I upgraded to 304.88, and everything looks nicer, but after I kill my window manager, thus closing the x server, I never see the TTY that I'm used to. Unfortunately I just left this computer at someone's house, and won't be able to get at it until next friday, but I'll dig through the error logs and report back.

Speaking of the error logs, where is the most likely place to look?

/var/log/Xorg.0.log
~/.xsession-errors
journalctl -b

This is the last bit of my Xorg.0.log.old, it doesn't seem to have any complaints.

I also have new information: if I hit ctrl-alt-f2.....n, I also get black screens, when I believe I should be getting virtual terminals. Again, I'm certain that the VT is back there, I can even log in, and start another xsession. I just can't see anything until the session gets started.

Hmm. I've been doing some digging, and it looks like this is a very old bug, that may be back. I'm seeing a lot of complaints from around 2007 in the trackers, but I'm fairly sure that both my xorg and nvidia are the latest versions.
