Volume Keys in Mate not working

Hello fellow Archers,

Right now I am running Mate and everything seems to be working fine except for one thing, the volume keys. The keys are bind correctly because when I press the V+/- key I see the pop up with the speaker symbol, but no change in volume happens. When I was running Gnome3 the volume keys were working fine. Has anyone encountered this issue?

I have been using i3(my primary wm) and when I switched back to mate I noticed that the volume keys were now displaying the volume +/- pop-up with the correct animation, but there is still no effect on the actual volume.
