pekwm: I'm actually excited!

I've seen people talking about pekwm loads in the last month or so and so far all I have been thinking is "YAWN - yet another box-like WM - that promises lots but actually does exactly the same as all the others".

Not so it seems...I'm reading the features list and what I see already kicks the crap out of fluxbox...maybe that fvwm config might stay on hold a bit longer...

Pekwm is small, but loaded with options, and it's very fast!  It became my default WM a couple months ago and will likely remain so for a while.

If you are going to try it (which I would definately reccomend), you should use the svn version from the aur, it fixes a lot of bugs that were annoying the crap out of me smile

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

agreed, svn is the way to go. considering they've fixed some of my own bug reports, i'm very happy heh.

pekwm is quite a bit faster than openbox, and has many more features, while still keeping light. i haven't used flux all that much, though.

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

Has anone else had problems, with setting the root background with svn.
works fine from a terminal but will not execute from within a theme....

any ideas have tried using different apps for it and all fail
(feh,Esetroot,fbsetbg....)

i think its to do with the root command section

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

Try xsetroot

EDIT: I only used it for solid colors with fvwm.  Might not be what you're looking for.

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

If pekwm is lighter than a duck does that make it a witch?

Anyway, I also had some trouble with it back when I was testing it out so I shall give the svn version a try the next time I care to attempt to migrate from Xfce4 again, which has not proven to last long. heh

Ouch... I installed the svn version but for some reason it screwed up some of my fonts and several of my theme configurations.  In fact, it actually introduced more problems for me than it solved, so I went back to the version in the "extra" repo.

Maybe I'll try it again once it matures a bit.

mpie... yes, the svn version screwed up my backgrounding, too!   :?

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

Why not just set the background from .xinitrc? Personally, I use a small bash script which (among other things) cycles my wallpapers using qiv to set root window background.

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

I can set them manually just not from the theme...

just kinda defeats the point of a theme if your setting it manually....

besides I'm fickle I may change my theme a few times a day

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

If it's important to you that the wall follows the theme, then I understand. For me it's the opposite as I hate when changing WM-themes screws with my wallpaper. Setting the background from xinitrc doesn't have to mean you can't change it as often as you like. When I run setbg path/to/img.png (which I also have in the send-to menu in Rox), the filename is stored in ~/.setbgrc. In xinitrc I run setbg without parameters (or with -r or -y for random/cycle)

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

Hey, fellow pekwm'ers... the default theme that they included with pekwm sure has a bad case of the "uglies", doesn't it?

I've not found very many themes available for the latest Pekwm, so I've had to resort to modifying some of the existing ones.  Anyone know where any can be found other than those at hewphoria?

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

I gave up on pekwm straight away.  I still have the latest pekwm-svn in my repo - the code has not been updated for several months.

Heh, I've got it installed, but I tried it at the same time as wmii, and went with wmii. Maybe I'll take another look.

Re: pekwm: I'm actually excited!

Word is that the main developer of pekwm is planning to rewrite pekwm from scratch. So hopefully we get a new tree to follow soon smile

So, does PekWM support transparent window border like fluxbox does?

Yes, and I'm anxious to hear from anyone that's tried this latest version to see if there are any big improvements, or new problems.
