Hello all,
i installed Arch some weeks ago and started with cinnamon as desktop environment as i used it some time with Linux Mint in a VM.
But somehow i didn't feel happy with it, so i started to give all the other environments a try...
now i decided to use gnome3/gnome shell...,
but it is missing a "taskbar", and i tested many docks and dockbarx form AUR got the deal (currently stand alone, but want to get it to work with AWN as soon as the current issue is gone).
Okay, now we are nearly at the Problem! ![]()
DockBarX supports a Window Preview, but according to this askubuntu post it only works with compiz.
and a quick dockbarx code review also shows many compiz related stuff...
NOW my question:
Is it possible to use Compiz with gnome3/gnome shell?!
Both, the german and the english wiki tell me to start it with "fusion-icon", but when i do this, it kills my gnome shell and does NOT start compiz, at least it wont work...
also the english guide has "compiz --replace ccp &" as alternative w/o fusion-icon, but that does not work also.
Is there any trick i'm missing to get compiz work with gnome3?
this is the output i get when i try to start fusion-icon...
dodge@dodge-pc ~ $ fusion-icon
* Detected Session: gnome
* Searching for installed applications...
* NVIDIA on Xorg detected, exporting: __GL_YIELD=NOTHING
* Using the GTK Interface
* Starting Compiz
... executing: compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp

It is not possible to run GNOME 3 and Compiz together. However, you do have options if you want a taskbar. You can download the taskbar that Linux Mint uses, or you can download an extension that is similar. Both of these options are described on this page: http://www.micahcarrick.com/3-taskbars-for-gnome-3.html
PS. Yes, the page is old, but the instructions should still work

Thank you for this information. That explains why i can't find any kind of guide/how to. ![]()

I think i'll give the Mint GNOME Shell Extensions a chance. (although it does not look as awesome as DockBarX - i really like the Win8 style
)
Thank you very much! ![]()

Glad I could help! If this solved your problem, don't forget to mark the thread solved. Also, you can run compiz with gnome-flashback, which is the "classic" gnome.
