Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

I have a very similar situation.  Following an 8 May upgrade, kactivitymanagerd began to crash when I changed from one activity to another.  That is still the case following the KDE 4.10.3 upgrade today.

Only one thing has changed : before the 4.10.3 upgrade, when kactivitymanagerd crashed I could manually start it again and it would allow me to change activities once before crashing.  After the upgrade, I can restart it, but now it won't let me change activities.  I guess the good news is that while it is inert, it doesn't crash.

After searching  for hints, I also tried removing .kde4, shutting down nepomuk, and even (before the 4.10.3 upgrade) downgrading soprano.  None of those had any effect on the problem.

At this point I'm reading the wiki to see if I can build a debug version in order to extract useful crash information.  That will be fun, but if someone comes up with a fix I would forego the pleasure.

Many thanks

Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

At last someone has the same problem smile

I have filed a bug report on archlinux bugtracker because on KDE forums suggested that this could be a packaging issue (see the bug https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/35169 )

Yesterday i have tried to compile some packages so that i would configure them with debug symbols but i don't have time to compile. So if you have the time that would be awesome.

Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

I followed the thorough ArchWiki explanation of producing debug traces and built debug versions of kactivities and qt4.  When I install the debug build of qt4, the problem goes away for both the release and debug build of kactivities.

The qt4 package was build with these makepkg.conf options

OPTIONS=(!strip docs libtool staticlibs emptydirs zipman purge !upx debug)

(strip turned off and debug turned on)

and with the -developer-build flag passed to configure in PKGBUILD.

Here's the KCrash listing for the offending thread using the release build of qt4 and the debug build of kactitivies.

Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/35159

There's a test app posted which i suggest to try to confirm this is your issue.
If this is your issue (likely, at least for the posted backtrace) get the former Qt build
http://arm.konnichi.com/extra/os/i686/q … pkg.tar.xz

DO NOT (repeat after me) DO! NOT! install the package - libQtGui links the wrong libpng and ALL Qt APPLICATIONS WILL CRASH IN RETURN! You understood? DO NOT INSTALL THE PACKAGE!

Instead extract it
tar -xJf qt4-4.8.4-16-i686.pkg.tar.xz

and ONLY!!! install libQtCore

sudo install usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4.8.4 /usr/lib

confirm that the test app does no longer crash, log out and in, better even (from VT1)

sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target
sudo systemctl start kdm

or just reboot

since this bug can really AFFECT ABOUT ANY Qt APPLICATION! - including kdm

Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

Built your qtimetest and it segfaulted under the current, release build of qt4.

Installed libQtCore.so.4.8.4

Ran qtimetest and it no longer sefaults.  (It does seem to hang after the critical tests have been carried out successfully, but I don't think that matters for the issue at hand - obviously I have no clue about QCoreApplication, but I'll look it up.)

And kactivitymanagerd no longer dies after the first activity change!

Looks like you're on target - thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

Upgrade to qt4 4.8.4-18; the segfaults should be gone.

There's a test app posted which i suggest to try to confirm this is your issue.
If this is your issue (likely, at least for the posted backtrace) get the former Qt build
http://arm.konnichi.com/extra/os/i686/q … pkg.tar.xz

DO NOT (repeat after me) DO! NOT! install the package - libQtGui links the wrong libpng and ALL Qt APPLICATIONS WILL CRASH IN RETURN! You understood? DO NOT INSTALL THE PACKAGE!

Instead extract it
tar -xJf qt4-4.8.4-16-i686.pkg.tar.xz

and ONLY!!! install libQtCore

sudo install usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4.8.4 /usr/lib

confirm that the test app does no longer crash, log out and in, better even (from VT1)

sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target
sudo systemctl start kdm

or just reboot

since this bug can really AFFECT ABOUT ANY Qt APPLICATION! - including kdm

Well yesterday i did exactly what you forbid. I installed 4.8.4-16 version and everything crashed smile
The problem has gone away with qt4-4.8.4-18 package.
Thanks for all the help

Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

The Qt eventloop does not implicitly exit, so it's ok to "hang" unless it gets some signal (ie. eg. you press ctrl+c)
Thanks for confirmation, the package is already updated.

Re: [SOLVED] [KDE] Activities started to crash

Did you retrieve the qt4-4.8.4-18 package from this URL in the bug 35159 page?

http://pkgbuild.com/~andrea/svn-package … pkg.tar.xz

When I access that I get a 404-Not Found error.

Thanks

It is already in official repositories.
