Can I ask what kind of characters?

Well it's mostly one's that belongs other alphabets, like cyrillic for example. And it sometimes appears at the end of lines.

Probably a stupid question, but do you have the correct fonts installed? I do know that what works in Firefox might not work in Chromium without extra fonts installed. Have you tried other browsers (for troubleshooting purposes)?

I haven't installed any particular fonts, what fonts do I need? I installed Midori, and it worked fine in this regard.

You can find a list of fonts and their respective languages here : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … t_packages.
For my part, I symply installed all of the ttf-* packages from extra and community (I could probably make some clean up and chosse what to keep, but a font isn't that big, and I have choice and absolutely no missing ones).
You should also install the windows7 MS fonts from AUR. It is always helpfull for work.
