Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

Hello to all,

I am new to Arch Linux and not that experienced in Linux. But I want to learn more. In fact, I have learned a lot since I switched from Fedora to Arch.
I will straight away go to my problem:

As indicated in the subject, I have noticed several errors concerning [drm:....] this morning when I booted and checked my system with journalctl -b.
I do not know how long these errors are there because I yesterday used journalctl for the first time.

Here is the result of journalctl -b:

Has anyone also noticed those errors? What should I do now?

Thank you very much for any suggestion and help.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

Update:

After updating the software and restarting, these errors do not appear anymore (at least within this particular restart).

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

For the record, drm and EDID both have to do with your display system and have nothing do to with networking.

drm is Direct Rendering M...  Okay, I don't know what the M means.  (not to be confused with Digital Rights Management)
EDID is Extended Display Identification Data, information stored about you display's capabilities and geometry that are read by the video driver so provide automatic configuration.  The checksum error meant that there were inconsistencies in the data read.  No idea why.

Edit,
Oh, and welcome to Arch smile

I would also like to extend a welcome to the Arch forums and community.

With journalctl, you have certainly discovered a powerful debugging tool.  It will no doublt come in handy along your learning adventures here.

A bit of advice though, the journal can be extremely verbose.  There is quite a bit of info that tells you things are working just fine, and since systemd is so ridiculously fast to boot, there are often hundreds, sometimes thousands of entries for a given second.  So when you find something in the journal that you are concerned about and are seeking help with, instead of posting the whole journal, next time, pull out the parts you want to include (that is copy/paste).  Scrolling through your own journal can be a tedious task, so scrolling through someone else's journal is typically much more tedious.

I will admit being very impressed by your use of code tags in a first post as a new Arch Linux user.  Bravo sir!

Thank you also for your welcome and your advises. I  saw from other posts that the people here use some special style of representing code, so I searched a bit and clicked here and there and clicked on the BBCode link below the 'Quick post'-window and voila found the help site of the forum.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

Update: Today, after booting, the errors weren't there. Again.

But there is still:

Mai 19 08:40:45 Nathan kernel: [drm] Wrong MCH_SSKPD value: 0x16040307
Mai 19 08:40:45 Nathan kernel: [drm] This can cause pipe underruns and display issues.
Mai 19 08:40:45 Nathan kernel: [drm] Please upgrade your BIOS to fix this.

My problem seems to be a bug mentioned here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64133

It seems that Linux 3.9 and Xorg have to do something with it.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

I see you are using a Macbook Air 4,2.  It is telling you to update your BIOS.  In a Mac of any kind there is no "BIOS" as we would typically think of it, as all available settings are configured through vairous mysterious key combos, or from userspace itself.  But I just checked and there is indeed an update for your machine.

Have a look here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237

I am not sure if you need to have an OSX installation on the machine or not.  But I also know that you can install OSX in a very minimal partition.  Maybe even a rescue partition or an external drive might do the trick.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

Yes, I have indeed a Macbook Air 4,2.
So it seems that I have to reinstall OSX (on a small part of my disc). I have at the moment a pure bios Arch install with a 15G root directory and a 99G home directory (all EXT4).
I have to shrink my home space to say 85G and use the rest for an OSX installation. Wow this isn't gonna be easy, I am not that experienced smile.

Edit:
I will first try to install the bios update without installing OSX.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

If you have an external HDD, or even something like a >=16GB USB flash drive, that might work.  Though I am not 100% about whether it will let you update your firmware from the external.  I do believe that it uses the OSX provided EFI System Partition for the firmware update though... it has been a while though, so I might be wrong on that.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

@WonderWoofy:

I installed Mac OSX on my external hard drive  and updated the software. Everything is updated. I checked that I really have the newest bios software installed (it is indeed the version in the table you posted above).

Sadly, I still get the following messages concerning drm:

Mai 20 19:31:53 Nathan kernel: [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
Mai 20 19:31:53 Nathan kernel: [drm] Memory usable by graphics device = 2048M

Mai 20 19:31:54 Nathan kernel: [drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query.
Mai 20 19:31:54 Nathan kernel: [drm] Wrong MCH_SSKPD value: 0x16040307
Mai 20 19:31:54 Nathan kernel: [drm] This can cause pipe underruns and display issues.
Mai 20 19:31:54 Nathan kernel: [drm] Please upgrade your BIOS to fix this.

So, at least we know that the bios software is the newest available.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

Update:
Even after updating to the kernel 3.9.3-1, i still get the messages above, f.e. after rebooting I got:

[drm:intel_dp_aux_wait_done] *ERROR* dp aux hw did not signal timeout (has irq: 1)!
Mai 21 18:18:01 Nathan kernel: [drm:intel_dp_aux_wait_done] *ERROR* dp aux hw did not signal timeout (has irq: 1)!
....
Mai 21 18:18:01 Nathan kernel: [drm] Wrong MCH_SSKPD value: 0x16040307
Mai 21 18:18:01 Nathan kernel: [drm] This can cause pipe underruns and display issues.
Mai 21 18:18:01 Nathan kernel: [drm] Please upgrade your BIOS to fix this.

The only thing I have ever done to Xorg is to change the dpi-value according to the description in the archlinux wiki. The dpi value was incorrect.

Edit: For this I created, as suggested in the wiki, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf  and put in:

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "<default monitor>"
    DisplaySize 286 179 # In millimeters
EndSection

Hopefully that   "<default monitor>" is correct, if not, this would be embarrassing.

Edit2:
Mentioning the above concerning Xorg, looked at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and found two errors:

[ 1287.857] (EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 1287.857] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

I will look up what that means. Suggestions are always welcome smile.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

Update: Since I have updated the Bios of my Macbook, the intel errors above do not occur anymore. (Thank you at WonderWoofy)
I still get the message that I have to update my Bios, but that is no error smile.
The last mentioned problems concerning Xorg (my comment before this one) are nearly solved. I have solved the "fbdev" issue.
I am still working on the "modesetting" thing. But this doesn't concern my question posted here.

Re: Several errors of the form [drm:.... ] *ERROR*, especially checksum

Rhodan, you can just install xf86-video-modesetting and xf86-video-fbdev if you want those errors to disappear (but I don't think that's really an error). However EDID information could mean a lot of things, broken LVDS cable if you use a laptop screen to damaged what_ever_cable_do_u_use to connect to external monitor. (Try attaching an external monitor and see if the message appears again).

Since I have updated my Bios, I get no EDID messages anymore.
