Apple headphone audio controls/microphone support

Hello, I have some of these: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD827 … c?fnode=3d .

They have a volume up/down and play/pause buttons, in addition to a microphone.  With the media keys in my keyboard I ran `xev` in a terminal to see what X called their events, but for these I'm not having any luck with that.

How can I hook up the buttons on my headphones to Xmonad/X?  Thanks!

end

Re: Apple headphone audio controls/microphone support

I do not think that you can use these without hardware modifications, since they have put some sort of electronics in them so they can't be used by units that are not licensed.

EDIT:
Sound (both ways) are supposed to work, but the buttons are not supposed to work with unlicensed hardware. It is possible to modify the electronics in them to make them ignore the fact that they're not "seeing" the right hardware in the other end. At least it was possible with the older versions.

'Unlicensed hardware'?  What does that mean?  Non-apple hardware?  Arch is running on my macbook, so that shouldn't be a problem, is there just not support for it?

In essence, yes.

The fact that you have an MB changes things. For it to work on that you have to have a 4 pole jack. I think (not a 100% sure here) they introduced that when the unibody MBP came out. What kind of MB do you have?

I have an '11-inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Air' (what it says in 'About This Mac' in MacOS)

I do not know if the Macbook Air supports this. The hardware of the Air have been a little bit different from the Macbook and the Macbook Pro over the years, so there are no garanties here. Perhaps somebody else in here can give a better answer than me.
